Cedro Update

There were some questions about the "steps" at Cedro. I just spoke with Kerry Wood, Trails and Wilderness Program Manager, Sandia RD, Cibola National Forest and Grasslands. He provided me with information about the steps and other parts of Cedro.

He said that users of the trails are "more than welcome" to play on the steps. It isn't far off the trail, and it isn't considered "cross-country travel". He said it is a popular place and provides a technical feature for those trails. I will be working closely with Kerry and other individuals within the community to have this on the map, so there is no doubt about this section. Also, there is a possibility to designate new technical features to the trails (more to come at the end of this month).

Please note that you can go up the steps and come back down. Please do NOT use the roads, such as the powerline roads with full-size vehicles. That is considered cross-country travel, and you can and will be ticketed.

If you decide to play on the steps, please don't trash the area or stack rocks. Someone recently took railroad ties to stack, so they could get up the steps. This is PROHIBITED.

Tread Lightly!

Here is a new map of Cedro (Manzanita Mountains Trail Map)

Thanks for the update! Loved the steps. I did notice the railroad ties and oil spill on the trail. I hate to see those things because that is what ruins the fun for everyone.

Good times!!

Good to see that you are having fun! That oil spill was new this weekend. We are going up there this Saturday to clean up the trail, and those railroad ties will be removed.

Where they on the steps or the side of the road? This weekend I went up there to move them.

The oil spill was at the beginning of the steps. I was pretty upset to see it and there was not much I could do to try to clean it up (no shovel or other equipment). I assume someone punctured their oil pan but it would've been nice if they would at least attempted to cover/clean it up.

I agree. We didn't have anything with us either. But maybe we can clean it up this weekend.

When are you going up? Isn't there also a trail cleanup planned for next weekend there?

There is a trail clean-up is Saturday the 22nd. We are meeting at the picnic tables off FR462 at 830. It should go fairly quick. I was up there last weekend, and we pulled trash. NM4W were up there too, and they were picking up trash as well.

I can't find it online, but I've got some cheapo oil spill absorbant pads I found at WalMart I believe. Good to have a few in your Jeep just in case.

Nooooooooooooooo! I had a feeling though. I need to continue exploring up north. There are some nice areas in the Jemez area.
