Question Off-Roading in New Mexico specific to BLM and beginner trails?

I am new to New Mexico off-roading and had a few questions about the BLM (bureau of land management) specific to New Mexico. I know there is a lot of BLM land between portales and roswell on highway 70, I even saw a sign that said "off-roading" on 70. Im not a rock crawler or even an experienced off-roader, but am looking more for beginner to intermediate stuff/nature trails. Sooo

1) Can i off-road on these BLM spots in the Jeep?
A)Do i need a permit/tag to do so?
B) What kinda experience level do you think most of these spots are?
C)Do you have a favorite on highway 70?

2)If you know of this off-roading sign on highway 70, can i take my jeep there or it is specific to motorcycles/dirtbikes and four wheelers?
A)Do I need some type of permit/tag?
B)Do you know the name of this spot?

3)Do you know any specific off-roading spots less than 2-2.5 hours away from portales/clovis NM any experience level works!
A)Do these spots require a permit/tag?

I have no idea about hgwy 70 and I'm on the other side of the state from you, but I can answer some of your BLM questions.

BLM lands are public lands that are usually designated as multiple use lands. Grazing, hiking, off-roading, and other fairly mundane stuff. Unless posted otherwise, you should be able to drive the roads and trails without a problem or permit. Most counties have BLM offices that will be able to provide you with maps and answer most of your questions. I have found that the trails in my area that are on BLM land are fairly tame and great for beginners, but depending on budgets and the BLM crew in your area you may actually find some challenging sections on what is a fairly tame road.

BLM lands are great assets to the people and they are funded through the fuel tax in NM. Over the years I've repaired abused section of trails in my area with my tractor. The abuse of our area's lands are from the rock haulers and wood cutters, but the blame falls on the recreational users of the lands. Everyone in my area is afraid of offending the local Spanish populace who do the damage so the blame falls to those that come to the lands to play.

NM is a great state to off road in. There's many places to do so and all it takes is some exploring and research. Join a club in your area and get involved.

I appreciate all the help and information. I will be getting a hold of one of the BLM offices very soon. Thanks again.
