Winch

Don't laugh! I was at SAMs Club yesterday and they have an 8000lb Champion Winch for $349. Is it junk? Does it work with my warn Elite bumper? I am going to Desert Rat to pick up some D rings. What about Their winches?

The desert rat brand winches are the same as harbor freight I think Darren told me. Best bang for the buck imo is the Engo 9000 with synthetic line for 400.

Those are good prices. I went with axis offroad 400 including shipping w synthetic. Either one is good but I think the synthetic line is the way to go.

Price has gone up a bit, i got my 10K Engo for 249 shipped, then put on MasterPull Syn line. IMO 10K lbs is the minimum i would go on a 4DR JK, most of us add armor, big tires, more weight to a already heavy 4 DR, a 2 DR id go with 8-9K lbs. Chris from Jeepaddon , from that link is very helpful.

Thanks guys! Shoot! Since I got the lift and the bumpers, it's like driving a completely different vehicle. It feels like a tank! Darren at Desert rat laughed at me when I put 4 D rings in my purse. Those suckers are another100 lbs. lol

Why 4? Unless you are going to leave em on. I dont like the banging or the look hanging there, but thats me. I have 4 but only because they came with my bumpers. I leave em in my tool bag in the back for when I need one. Also please think about a synthetic winch line. Number one is the safety factor and they are lighter weight and easier to work with. Some jeep clubs wont even let you go with them with steel winch line..

Ya, I put them on and realized someone is going to steal them so back in the jeep they go.

I will get a synthetic line. You guys know much more than I do so I will listen to ya. Off to put on my grad handles so I can get in the jeep now. Lol. Eta: oh hell! Should have bought Velcro. Waiting on my son to do it.

Question.
Do you guys leave your winches in gear when not in use?
Thanks.

Absolutely, otherwise there's a chance of the rope/line paying out by itself with normal driving vibrations. This could have catastrophic results. I would not recommend leaving it in neutral unless you have another means to prevent the spool from spinning (relatively) freely.

I leave my D rings on but I tighten them on with a screwdriver so that hands alone are out of luck.
