Anyone from Houston, Texas?

I live in NYC right now, but I am probably going to move to Texas for my job, and I am trying to find out any information anyone has about the area.
-Things like good neighborhoods (and neighborhoods to stay away from), any recommendations at all.

and lets not forget... places to go 4wheelin',

Thanks

The Houston area is like living in someone's arm pit. HOT, HUMID, and stinky.......... Hope you can ask for a better place to live in TX. I would not wish Houston, on anyone.

I was born in Houston and raised in East Texas. Yes it's hot and really really humid. It's the kind of humidity that will fog your glasses when you walk outside. You get used to it though.

I can't offer much in the way of where to live as it has been a long time since I lived there. That being said; welcome to the Lone Star State.

Nacogdoches / Etoile here. I lived on Lake Sam Rayburn for about 6 years.

i am from Sugar Land (southwest houston) so i am partial to it. my parents still live there and my dad commutes into downtown houston for work.

katy is also very nice as is the woodlands and kingwood areas.

none of those places are actually IN houston, but rather suburbs. it really just all depends on where you will be working. for me living in new braunfels and having to drive 26 miles to work = 26 minutes of driving to get to work. in the houston area (in it or around it) 26 miles to work = 1 hour + of driving to get to work. it can take 30 minutes to get through one intersection in some parts of houston.

there are very few places within the city limits of houston that i would actually live. other than those areas, the schools are BAD, the crime is worse, and the property values are....squat. that is a highly generalized statement, but anyone from or familiar with houston would understand.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing as reserve police officers down in Texas? I'll be on a tugboat, so I would work 20 days, but then be off for 10? would that be allowed with the reserve officers down there?

Thanks

thought id give this a bump. if your in south houston, seabrook, webster, clear lake, or anywhere south of the beltway theres a jeep meetings nearby every friday around 6-9ish. exit 45 at Nasa road...head east untill you cross space center. theres a boat dock where Baja Jeep Association meets up. went last week, it was fun. around the first of the month they plan off roading trips aswell.

that'd be great, I'd appreciate it. My apartment is located in League City(?) I guess, but when I was down there a few months ago, people were using clearlake and seabrook interchangeably it seemed. So I'm still not sure how that works, I figured I'd understand having been from New York City, with our use of New York, New York City, the City, and/or any of the boroughs randomly as well lol

ah. seabrook and clearlake are diffrent. but they are neighboring cities. league city is also its own city. depending on your local in leaguecity youll probably be about 15 minutes away from the meet spot.

i recomend studying a highwaymap to see all these neighboring cities and learning the highways. or youll be lost forever

Haha, I cheat, I actually have myself a lil' GPS thing, for a guy who makes his living navigating ships, and whose first lesson was NEVER TRUST GPS, i'm afraid I've gotten into the rut of powering up my GPS, enter the address and drive lol.

I did order a bunch of maps from good ole' AAA so that I can take a look at the areas and stuff. My Wrangler is still pretty much stock, because I didn't want to change much until I finished my move. Are there any good 4wheel parts stores or anything down there? Or does everyone just buy their stuff online?
