Well, for a D.D. that will take you more places than you will believe, I would look for a stock to lightly modified TJ (or LJ) Rubicon (2003 - 2006). These have selectable lockers, 4.10 gears, and a stronger transfercase with 4-1 low gearing stock. A minor (approx 3") suspension lift (with some minimal plastic fender trimming), a 1" body lift and you can run up to 35" tires (33" with no trimming). Add a belly up transfercase skid plate, and that set up will drive on the road all day, and run most all but the extreme trails.
I suggest starting with a Rubicon because Jeep's have great resale value, but you only get a very minor bump in price for aftermarket up-grades. To upgrade a non-Rubicon to the same level as a Rubicon will cost $$$ (read thousandS
). By finding one from the factory already built you get your best bang for the buck in later resale value (if you decide to EVER sell it). If you find a non Rubican built to that level, there is a reason; it was used for rockcrawling. Not that that is bad, but for a D.D. you can probably find a Rubicon that has primarily been a mall crawler/street queen, and even bone stock has an amazing off-road capabilities. Then as you drive more off-road you can decide what up-grades (if any additional) are best for what you want to use the Jeep for.
