North Padre Island

Can anyone that has been camping on North Padre provide some feedback? I am looking to take a quick trip with my son and since we both love camping, fishing and the beach I have been looking at North Padre, the other things that attracts me to that area is I can drive my JKU on the beach.

I know the are is undeveloped, lots of seaweed and other things you can expect from a natural seashore. If anyone could provide some feedback about their experiences there it would be appreciated.

Also, when driving on the beach what pressure should I take my tires down to (2013 JKU Sport) and how close is the nearest air pump once you hit paced roads again?

We go down to Port A and love it. Mustang Island State Park has allows beach camping and they have showers on the beach as well as more amenities up by the headquarters. Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) is a must do. After entering the park and hitting the beach you'll head south. Before long, you come to the "4 wheel drive only" sign. Past that point the beach conditions can vary greatly, but the further south you go, the steeper the beach gets, the deeper the ruts, etc. People camp and fish all along but you can have a spot all to yourself easily. I'm not sure how much you'll want to air down. I've always gone without. Have fun!

Idk if I'm too late on this but I love camping at PINS. It's not too bad. Take plenty of water and food and a good tent that's all u need. I didn't air down and never had problems.

I went camping there in 06 timeframe. It was awesome! No need to drop the tire pressure, just run down the beach in 4 wheel.

Be prepared to live and eat in sand. I'd recommend a small electric vacuum to use in your tent at night. Also, bring plenty of ice since there isn't a lot of shade to keep the cooler...cool.

Have a blast...it was the best camping trip we've ever taken!

A few pics...

If you screw around in 2wd...getting stuck IS possible.

Thanks for the advice and input. Loading up the Jeep in the morning and hope to be on the road by 5:00 AM. Leaving from Mansfield (Just southwest of Dallas) and will taking the more scenic route. Either going to take Hwy 77 or 281, I hate interstates and since I am not in a huge hurry the additional time won't bother me.

Have a really big cooler for food and drink, froze 2 cases of water and 5 2 gallon jugs to help with keeping things cold and then can drink the water as they thaw. I will have additional ice in the big cooler and the 2nd cooler is for nothing but extra ice so I should be set.

My son and I are really looking forward to this and hope to have a blast.

Great weekend with perfect weather. Wish the fishing had been better but it was still ok. I love PINS and will go back as often as I can.

Drove the whole 60 miles down to the south end on Saturday. A lot of hard pack to drive on but there were some really soft areas, nothing I couldn't get through fairly easily but it was soft and deep in spots. It takes a couple hours to mae it to the end so be prepared if you try it.

If you like the outdoors this is a can't miss trip. Yes there is debris on the beach that washes in from the gulf, heavy in some spots not so much in others. Overlook it and take in the natural beauty that does exist there.

We camped about 4 miles down the beach, far enough away from the crowds but close enough if we needed to head up to the store etc. Beautiful sky at nigh with no ambient light.

Already planning my next trip.
