Thanks for confirming.

Yes, that's the campsite.

Here's a GPS track from Garlock Road to Holland Camp, if you want to load it into your GPS device.
Garlock Road to Holland Camp

Hey, all you folks who are driving up Friday night and not caravaning with me.... I expect we should be at camp by around 6:30-7:00pm. I'll leave my CB radio on, tuned to channel 12. If you need help, you can try hollering over the radio in case you're within range, but camp is about 4 miles (as the crow flies) from Garlock Road. I don't remember if there's cell coverage at camp, but PM me if you want to swap mobile numbers. I might be able to drive down the dirt road to Garlock Road to show people the way up, if I'm able to receive a text message or phone call with your ETA.
Just a thought Yomondo, maybe I can mark the trail to the campsite? Let me know.

Stan

That would be a good idea. I just was thinking last night, that I might want to pick up some wooden stakes that I can pound into the ground on my way up to camp, to mark the intersections. Tie a blue (for left) or red (for right) ribbon on the top of the stake. What do you think? We'll just have to be sure to remove the stakes afterwards.

Camping Questions

OK initially I was planning on driving my 24' Class C RV to Holland Camp and towing my TJ. But now that I ACTUALLY READ the first page it looks like that is a no go due to the poor condition of the road into Holland Camp.

So now I am looking at either camping at the air strip (away from the fun) or investing in a tent etc....

Is anyone else planning on an RV?

Has anyone on here actually driven an RV to Holland Camp? Sometimes the roads are much better than described.

Thanks

It's been a couple years since I've been there, but I remember it being a bit bumpy and a bit winding in places. It's also a bit steep uphill in places. Honestly I don't see an RV getting up there, but if someone has a different opinion, or if someone local wants to take a drive up there sometime before the run to check it out, that'd be great.

On the other hand if there are enough people who want to use their RV or trailer for camping, or if people driving in at night would just feel better about taking the much easier and shorter road to the air strip, I'm open to changing campsites. What do y'all think? I'm fine either way. I just like Holland Camp because it's more secluded.

I would like to be put down as a maybe. I don't have tow points though. How much of a requirement would these be? I am originally from Florida so I am new to the rock scene. Also, it will be a day run for me if I can get away since I am up in Ridgecrest. For anyone who has made this run, would this be a good run to bring the kiddos along?

I put you on the "maybe" list. You should really have some kind of tow point though. The other guy who has no rear tow point at least has a front one, plus his Jeep is built up to where it's not likely he would get stuck unless he's goofing off on something. If you get stuck, we would need some kind of tow point to pull you out. Do you have a tow receiver in back?

This is a family friendly run.

Well that sucks that people do that. I don't know if anyone will be staying back at camp, but usually not.

Tow hooks are about $10-15. Some come with nuts and bolts some don't.

The factory bumper is usually not a good recovery point, as it's not very strong, plus there may not be a good place to attach to.

Do you have a tow receiver? If so, you can buy a receiver shackle to put in there.

Yah, with a 4.5" lift and 37's it's not likely you will get stuck on this trail, so I'll leave it up to you.

Some guy told me my lift was 4 1/2, I know I have 37's Where is the campsite?

The more IE or LA county Jeepers that join in, the easier it'll be to set my pull out time. Let me know. I'll lead, follow, or round up. I'm a team player, and I really need this escape.

This is my tentative plan for Saturday morning:

0600 Roll from the house. Take 58 to 395.
0700 Arrive 4 corners. Bathroom break for the 3 girls with me @ Pilot.
0730 Depart 4 corners. Roll up 395 to Garlock Rd.
0830 Hit the trailhead with time to spare.

Anyone coming up from the IE for a day trip might want to link up with us at 4 corners (Kramer Junction). There is a Burger King and a Pilot Truck Stop there. This is the last place to get food and gas before the trail (~50 miles from Pilot to trailhead).

Alternative route from 4 corners would be 58 to Boron then California City. This would be the same distance but less direct ... and would put gas ~20 miles from trailhead.

Goler Gulch will be tentative depending on how late it gets and who's still up for more wheeling after we're done with everything else. If we run Goler Gulch, there's a slight possibility it could turn into a partial night run, which would also be fun, so you might want to prepare for that. We could also opt to intentionally make Goler Gulch a night run. Feel free to post up your feelings regarding running Goler Gulch.

Come for just a day run, or camp with us Friday or Saturday night or both nights.
If you're camping, please bring firewood. Thank you.

Requirements/Recommendations:
- Please NO DRINKING ALCOHOL ON THE TRAIL!
- Front and rear tow points required.
- Full-size spare tire required.
- Rock rails: recommended on lifted Jeeps, required on stock height Jeeps unless you understand and accept the risks of not having them.
- CB radio highly recommended.

Campsite: Holland Camp 35.4628,-117.7967
This is a primitive campsite. There are no bathrooms and no water. The dirt road up to camp is a bit bumpy, so this campsite is not trailer or RV-accessible except for offroad trailers.

Directions to Holland Camp:
- From the 14 freeway, heading north 20 miles past Mojave, veer right on Redrock Randsburg Road and go 12.1 miles (Note: At 6 miles, you'll pass the Last Chance Canyon trailhead on the left.)
- Keep left onto Garlock Road and go another 2.9 miles
- 35.4189,-117.7629 Turn left onto EP-11 (dirt road) and go 1.1 miles
- 35.4329,-117.7699 Keep left at the fork and go 1.5 miles
- 35.4433,-117.7906 Keep right at the fork and go 0.7 mile
- 35.4514,-117.7851 Turn left at the T intersection and go 1.0 mile to Holland Camp
You'll see the remains of an abandoned structure at Holland Camp
Here's a GPS track showing the way to Holland Camp from Garlock Road.

Friday Afternoon Caravan:
Meet at Jack in the Box Santa Clarita at 4:00pm
Sierra Canyon Plaza Shopping Center
18525 Vía Princessa, Canyon Country, CA 91387
661-251-0017
1. yomondo
2. I H8RDS
3. Kaisertod
4. MNTNGOAT
5. Iwanna

Possible Friday Night Caravan (to be arranged - meet on 14):
1. Xjman1
2. Bhealey28
3. minisaba

Tentative Saturday Morning High Desert Caravan (meet at 4 corners):
1. WOKNROX
2. JoeBot13

Here's the plan for Saturday 12/1/12:

We'll be on CB channel 12. Pack a lunch to eat on the trail. Bring snacks and plenty of water.

For those who are meeting us at the trailhead:

Eat breakfast and gas up before meeting at the trailhead. If you're coming from the LA/SFV/SCV areas, the last reasonably priced gasoline (if there is such a thing these days) is in Mojave. That's also your last food and supply stop.

From Mojave, go 20 miles north on the 14 to Redrock Randsburg Rd. Veer right onto Redrock Randsburg Rd and go exactly 6 miles to the Last Chance Canyon trailhead on the left. The trailhead is easily overlooked and passed up, so I suggest you zero your trip meter at the Redrock Randsburg turnoff and go 6 miles.

For those who are at camp Saturday morning, we'll leave camp at 8:15am.

9:00am Meet at Last Chance Canyon trailhead 35.3622,-117.8984 (the days are short, so we want to get a little early start)
We'll air down and disconnect here, and have a quick little pre-run meeting and go over pointers for the newbies and answer any questions.

Bickel Camp 35.4362,-117.8867
After running Last Chance Canyon, we'll stop here to check out this historic mining camp.
Note: If we don't run Goler Gulch, all the rock crawling is behind us at this point and the rest is just historic and scenic stuff.

Burro Schmidt's Cabin 35.4107,-117.87425
We'll stop here to check out Burro Schmidt's old cabin.

Burro Schmidt Tunnel 35.4104,-117.8759
And of course the infamous tunnel. We'll break for lunch here, and you'll also have the opportunity to walk through the tunnel and check it out. Bring a flashlight (which you should have in your Jeep anyway).

Mesquite Canyon Intersection 35.4364,-117.8426
If we DON'T run Goler Gulch, we'll bear right (south) here to head back down Mesquite Canyon, which will drop us off at 35.3889,-117.81695 where we'll air up or head back to camp.

Goler Gulch Intersection 35.4822,-117.8048
If we DO run Goler Gulch, we'll continue north on Mesquite Canyon then bear right (east) here to start heading down Goler Gulch for a little more rock crawling. The bottom of Goler Gulch is at 35.4191,-117.7631 where we'll air up or head back to camp.

Post up if you'd like to join us.

Going:
1. yomondo (camping)
2. Ancientpath (day run)
3. castman2 (day run)
4. JoeBot13
5. MNTNGOAT (maybe camping)
6. csumjr (camping Saturday)

I've never had a problem leaving my RV behind and your story is the first one I have heard. Even if my RV did get broken into there is not much to take. No TV and the stereo SUCKS! They would probably be doing me a favor. Be that as it may, looks like RVs can't really make it up to Holland Camp and I have already done a bit of damage to mine following Lori to camp sites. Well actually ALL of the damage I have done to mine came from following Lori to camp sites but those are different stories

Anyway, I think I have the hook up to borrow a tent and I work in North Hollywood so it looks like my best option is to hook up with the crew at Jack in the Crack on Fri at 16:00.

Did you pass the turn off to Sky Ranch with them (cuz you was a yappin too much) and then flip a u-turn on a narrow road? Hmmmmm and the road to Dutchman's camp jumped up and bit BOTH me and Bernie.

It is all good.

For the Record - NOT LORI'S FAULT.

I just like to yank her chain every so often.

I'm game for whatever you want to do Yomondo. Once we decide that the Holland campsite is the destination, we can work out the particulars. I'm here so planting stakes would save you some time. You have your hands full with other stuff. Besides,I'm sure I can get some help.

Let me know

So far I don't know who else will be coming from the IE on Friday. Meeting up with one of the Friday caravans going up the 14 would take you way out of your way.

Thanks for the offer of help. That'd be great. We'd have to be careful about putting up stakes too far in advance though, because rangers or others might take them down. Let's figure this out as the date gets closer.

Hmmm, there is a more interesting shortcut between Goler Gulch and Burro Schmidt than Mesquite canyon. Has some off camber, steep decents and ascents as well. It is just past Colorado Camp, right turn, not used very much. Might have to do a pre-run, AHEM ANCIENT PATH, to ensure all is till well with that trail.

Maybe we don't need different color ribbons as I previously suggested, if we just place the stakes on the right side of the correct path like the way rock cairns are placed on some trails.
