2nd Annual So Cal WF Meet & Greet Run - March 26-28, 2010

Well we missed out on the Westside Fall M&G, so how about we start planning the 2010 spring M&G. I'm looking for suggestions as to where to hold it and a few people to help coordinate it.

Anza Borrego worked great this year so I'm kinda tempted to go back there again. Or we could move it north to Johnson Valley or ?

Here's some pictures from this year to remind everyone of the fun we had:

Check out this thread for more great pics: 2009 So Cal WF Meet & Greet, March 27-29

But honey... Brian is already married! Even though same sex marriages are all the rage, I don't think I'd go for you having two husbands and as sexy as Brian is, I just don't swing that way!

Come hell or high water, I'm planning on doing this M&G again. Great fun, great people!

The same general area as we did before would be good, and JV is good too. I don't know any trails in JV (Johnson Valley) that everyone with less built Jeeps could get through though. If someone knows where JV's easier trails are, that'd be fine but it's a long ways out there to do easier trails that can be done at less remote areas. Much of Death Valley is off-limits to offroading and what is left is often not much more than a dirt road. One Death Valley area that is good and has more challenging trails is the Panamint Mountain area but that's a long ways too for some.

I am definitely in this time. I'm not going to miss hanging out with you all again. I don't care where we do it. I'm becoming a regular in JV. LOL Hell Josh and I are thinking of doing an overnighter to JV right now.

OK, has a location been chosen yet? I am planning to go, but don't want to spend the days at camp cause my Jeep is not as monsterous as others and cannot handle the extreme trails.

Cain and I are in as usual. We might be campers for the weekend, or riders if there's empties, but we will be there regardless.

I'm seriously bummed that I won't be able to attend this year's SoCal M&G. I had a blast last March with you guys!!!!

There are alot of forum members here in Kansas. I'm going to see if any of them want to get together this Spring and do something here at one of the Off Road Parks.

Exclamation

OK gang.

I'm gonna volunteer to pick up the ball and run with it.

Here's what I am thinking and if we all agree, I'll go about getting everything lined up.

First, I think the Anza Borrego area is the best choice. It has challenging yet non-impossible terrain and it's IMO some of the prettiest country in the world. I don't know if you guys noticed last year but the night ski at 3am (when I was hiking to the john) was breath taking! I've never seen so many stars.

I want to get with Unlimited to see if he's started anything. I understand this year has been incredibly busy for him so we need to get this monkey off his back. I want him to be able to set back and enjoy it this year without having to go at mach 3 with his hair on fire.

So, March 26-28 is a date that has been set. I say this year we go for that free campground right up the road from where we stayed last year.(Agua Caliente). It's located around Mile Post 23 on the S2. Check out page 193 int your Guide to California Backroads& 4-Wheel Drive Trails on page 193. Don't worry, as we get closer to the M&G I'll post up pages in this thread.

This camp ground houses some challenges. It's "primative" but still has rest rooms. If we choose, we can venture in a little farther to another camp site but it has no facilities. I'm gonna double check, but I think I saw a spigot out there the last time for water. We were all blessed by having a shower last year. We are gonna have to get our heads together (those of us without motorhomes) and come up with a rudimentary camp shower. It shouldn't be too hard, I'm pretty sure I can pic up the hardware pretty cheap at Lowes.

I'm also gonna be working on constructing some sort of "Fire Pit Stove". I think along with that, and the many of you who have camp stoves, we can get a full blown camp kitchen working.

What we'll need folks to bring:

Well, I'm guessing we should all bring a couple packs of fire wood or if you have a wood pile at home and don't mind bringing it, we'd all be grateful.

Also Ice seemed to be a hot commodity last year. SO we'll probably end up riding up the road to the camp store at Agua Caliente. No biggie. If someone has a couple of extra coolers we could store some ice in I would appreciate you bringing them.

Food. Just as last year, each person should volunteer to bring food for our big dinner. I'll let you guys post up what you want to bring and we'll continue the list until everything has been addressed. Feel free to be creative. I'd like to try some fire roasted rattle snake this year!

As far as wheeling is concerned, I think we should run pretty much the same trails. Only this time I think we should maybe run Diablo Drop Off the other way. And maybe this year we can go up Coyote Canyon to the monument for a trail lunch. And how about we check out Fonts Point? It's not really wheeling but should be an entertaining sight seeing trip.

So post up some ideas and we'll go from there. I'm looking forward to this!

Deb and I are in. We'll bring enough wood for 1 fire for the entire weekend.

I will volunteer to help with one of the runs if we need it.

I will enjoy everyone's company and jeep for the weekend.

Sounds fun to me Chris, I think I should be able to make that without problem. How far is it between the area for wheeling you have envisioned and the last campsite we were at? That was a great campsite except for it being so crowded that weekend.

I think Cain is wanting a different campsite due to his fear of the Borrego Beast. I thought she was lovely.

Hahaha... Yep.

YOU CAN'T SMOKE HERE
AND YOU HAVE TO MOVE
THAT CAMPER... AGAIN!

Actually, I was thinking about the free campsite because of a few reasons.

1. It's FREE.
2. We can have a camp fire after 10pm.
3. Us smokers don't have to hide out behind the bathroom to smoke.

Sounds like a good reason not to go back to that same camp ground. I was just digging the showers there, I'm not use to that kind of luxury. One more place out in the Anza Borrego area that has slightly improved camping facilities which really just means showers is there on the 78 just west of Main St. where many of the 4x4 events are held.

But the spot you have picked out is fine so far as I am concerned, the lack of showers there is no big deal. Maybe I'll be able to pick up one of those portable heated showers like Cabela's sells by then... that would still be pretty luxurious so far as I am concerned.

I am used to taking hobo showers. Heat up some water on the camp stove, pour it into a bucket and lather as fast as you can before you get cold. Rinse, repeat. Hmmmm. I like camping.

I just saw info on this on another unrelated site about Anza Borrego. Think this might be a fun side trip/scenic stop for the group? At least to drive to and check out. Here is a link with info. Goat Canyon Trestle... Goat Canyon Trestle

Hey gang...

It's late and I can't sleep but I've been settin' here thinking about the Meet and Greet and a few things came to mind.

I'm sure this can go unsaid... Well, most of it anyway but there are a few trail requirements that I think we should touch base on and they are the same as last year.

The only vehicle requirements are tow points front and rear, and a safe vehicle that is in good repair. However, you should also have a CB radio, working fire extinguisher and first aid kit. It is also a good idea to have tools, extra fluids and parts as you think maybe necessary. You may also want to think ahead and have reserve fuel on your rig. The nearest gas station is a ways down the road.

Also echoing last years event... !!!NO ALCOHOL OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED ON THE ROAD AND ON THE TRAIL!!! But I expect base camp to smell like a brewery!

I would like for all attending to do me a favor. In the unlikely event that someone gets separated, lost or eaten by the Borrego Beast, I would like for you to PM me with a description of your rig and the tag number and how many souls you'll have on board. I'm NOT gonna let this info out. I just feel it necessary to have in the event of an emergency so we can advise the Rangers and or EMS personnel should something happen.

As your resident Field Medic, it's my duty to remind you that even though it's not gonna be super hot down there this time of year, you'll need to pack plenty of water and stay hydrated. Not to be graphic but you can tell if you're dehydrated by the color of your urine. 99% of all people walk around in a constant state of dehydration. I don't wanna have to stick you with a 14 gauge needle and pump liquid into your arm, but I can if I have too. There are a couple rules of thumb to help you identify if you're dehydrated. If your pee is dark yellow you need to drink more and try to keep from feeling thirsty. I expect to see everyone with water bottles in their rigs. I'll make sure that I have extra before we head out. I'd rather stop a thousand times on the trail for pee breaks than once to gather up your carcass. I would kindly ask you guys to keep and eye out for each other. If someone is acting weird or stops sweating or their skin changes color, let someone know ASAP.

Also make sure you have sun screen and for those of you rolling without a top should wear a hat and sunglasses.

OK, enough preachin' Cain! Get on with the info! Geez!

As far as the area. Here are s few of the maps from last years run for reference. Granted things may change up to the last minute but the location will remain the same.

Guys, if you plan on wheeling in SoCal you need this book!

Mr Wells and his associates were kind enough to explore these areas and compile them into a nice, glove box size book. How the hell do I get a Job like that?

Anyway, here are a few maps of the trails in the area where we will be.

Here is also a topo map:

Here's where I'm gonna need some input from you guys:

I had a blast at the Mud Caves last year on Friday night. However there were some in the group that were a bit intimidated by spelunking. So what say, since our campsite is gonna be close we check out the Pictographs in Blair Valley? My only concern it how dark it's gonna be by the time we get there. Please guys, by all means, if you have an idea for a Friday night soirée, feel free to make suggestions.

As for Saturdays run. You guys have a choice. We can duplicate the Saturday run from last year whereas we meet at the Pinion Mountain trailhead and end up at Ocotilla Wells. Or we can run Pinion Mountain and swing back around and do Diablo Drop off and come back out on the S2 and head for camp. Either way make sure you have a lunch packed.

GPS coordinates for Pinion Mountain trailhead are : 33* 03.404N / 116* 25.280W

On Sunday we can go check out the Goat Canyon Trestle if that is OK with everyone.

That's about all I have for now. Keep your eye open for updates.

There again... This is ALL tentative. We still have some time to plan this out. So please offer up any suggestions for things you'd like to see or do.

I'm thinking of changing the thread title to "The 2nd Annual So Cal WF Meet & Greet Run, white water rafting and glass bottom boat tours - March 26-28, 2010"

I need to find a crap load of 55 gallon drums cuz I'm thinking of converting the F250 into a party barge.
