Sorry to hear that. We will plan to see you Saturday though.

Everyone else ready for the weekend?

Jess Deegan, of the Bakersfield Trailblazers, is trying to adopt Nightmare Gulch for the Trailblazers. He stated it has been closed since Oct 10th. If and when I find out anymore information I will pass it on. Dave

I just spoke with a ranger for the area. He said there is an email stating why Nightmare Gulch is now closed. I will be getting that and posting it here. But basically, due to a recent flash flood, it's made the trail undrivable. Also, the closure is to protect the geological conditions. I'm not sure if this is a permanent closure or not. I'm hoping to get a little more info from the email.

OK, here's the email:

Jennifer:
The closure of Nightmare Gulch to vehicles is a permanent closure. It is still open to hiking
and equestrian use. The reasons for the closure are cited as protection of sensitive biological
and geological resources as well as public safety due to the deterioration of the vehicle route
due to a recent flash flood.
We are sorry for the inconvenience but it just cannot be helped.
Sincerely,
Norm Lee

So sad. :-( I really enjoyed that trail.

Unfortunately that puts a little damper on our weekend plans. But, we can always run Mesquite Canyon that's also in the area. There are plenty of trails in Red Rock canyon to explore. It's just sad...I was looking forward to running Nightmare Gulch.

And now for the BAD news boys & girls...... I did something to my rear dif when we were crawlin around on the rocks at Stoddard Wells last Sunday. Looks like I am on the disabled list until I replace my rear axles (and maybe spider gears). Waaaaa......we were really looking forward to this one. Looks like me and my bride will be eating guacamole by ourselves this weekend. If not before, I guess we will have to wait until the 4th annual end of summer run next year. Let me know if any of you plan to be down in my neck of the woods. I'll do my level best to show you around.

I got an updated email about Nightmare Gulch:

Jennifer:

I was just informed that the Nightmare Gulch closing is just temporary, not
permanent. Evidently they are studying ways to repair the route.

Norman Lee
Mojave Sector Office

At least it's not a permanent closure. Still gonna be closed for this weekend though.

To add to Toad's email...

I sent Mr. Lee an email as well with some input as well as a "proposal." I have not heard back from him as of yet, but will keep you all updated if I do.

As of now we will not be running nightmare...but will still be doing last chance. Instead of nightmare, we can run goler or opal or something as well as check out the tunnel.

I talked with Scott Stacy ( Pres. Antelope Valley 4 Wheelers), He is meeting with a rep from Corva tomorrow, to propose a group trail maintenance plan, to help with reopening the trail. Bakersfield Trailblazers are proposing the same idea.

I believe sites are $25 a night and first come first serve.

But yes, it looks like nightmare is a no go...I am pretty bummed as well. Hopefully it gets opened up sooner than later.

Might have to drop the top for this one.

So now that nightmare is off the table, what is the battle plan? Since you are on that side of the park we can put in through Black Rock canyon. Nothing hard but it is scenic in parts. There is a lava waterfall to check out and it ends where Nightmare ends, right before last chance.

Are you going to the sites as well, Bickel Camp, Holly cleanser mine (I know a short cut), Burro Schmidt, etc?

An environmental impact report has to be done on the canyon before a course of action can be taken. A sign at the gate now explains the closure. Nightmare is still open for hiking and horses.

Although we're having big problems as work today and I may be spending much of tonight cleaning up things. So just a heads-up, there's a chance I may not get to leave as early as planned tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.
