4 Wheel 2 Heal needs volunteers for Operation Desert Fun!

4 Wheel 2 Heal (4W2H) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping our wounded veterans heal by boosting their morale through taking them to off-roading events.

This awesome organization just recently spread to the west coast and will be taking a few vets out to Operation Desert Fun on October 19th and 20th @ Truckhaven.

They are looking for volunteers to provide open seats for the veterans out on the trails, as well as a few hands to help out at the campsite. 4W2H needs about 5-10 rigs that will commit to line-up together to allow the vets to ride the trails as a group. This is an opportunity to join jeepers from other forums and clubs across SoCal to come together and give back to the warriors that have given our country so much.

I will do my best to answer any questions on this post, but if you would like to commit as a volunteer please email the 4W2H west coast director, Jen Schultz:

jennifer.schultz@4w2h.org

She is very busy organizing several events for the vets, so it may take a while to hear back from her.

Thanks!

I'm in the club that is sponsoring ODF and would feel honored to have one of the vets ride ride with me.

How built do the rigs need to be? ie: tire size, lockers, etc...

ODF has trails suitable for stock to highly modified 4x4 vehicles. Some trails are suitable for stock SUVs without lockers, others would need f/r lockers & 35" tires, and everything in between.

If I didn't just change my days off I would have loved to have volunteered for Sunday. If anything changes I'll let you know!

Inviting disabled vets to ride with some us is just part of the event, its all about wheeling with plenty of trails & obstacles to test your Jeep with.

All the info is at http://www.cal4wheel.com/events/operation-desert-fun

4W2H will be out there with the vets and they will have a booth set up. Swing by and see them if you are out at ODF! Great organization!

Will the event cover the entire weekend, or just the 19 and 20th? I'd love to give back to those who gave.

Awesome! If you want to stop by 4W2H while you are out at ODF just shoot Jen Schultz an email at jennifer.schultz@4w2h.org to get the low down on where they will be!

Id love to join in!

Are all the volunteers going to be doing the same trails?

Also are all the volunteers going to be camping near the 4W2H area?

That one I can answer... They want to keep all the vets together on the same trail so it's done as a team.

At this point I'm sure they have all the seats covered, as they are only going to have a handful of vets with them and they have entire clubs volunteering. They will need extra hands setting up, cooking, etc. Also just showing up and showing your support for these guys would mean the world to them. This is only their second event in Southern California so they are still networking, and the more support they get now the more vets they can take out in the future.

I'll try to get updated info for you guys! Thanks again for wanting to help out

Have you guys checked to make sure that they have a Valid permit for ODF..?
Do to the government shutdown the BLM has shutdown all monitored events do to lack of personnel.... we just found out last night that the BLM has granted VV4W the permit for "Fun in The Desert" this weekend.....one of very few events to do so....this is just an FYI.

Moe, I haven't heard back from her yet myself. They have been busy with Pomona Off Road Expo, and they are an Active Duty military family, so sometimes it takes a while. As soon as I find out I will let everyone know. Unfortunately I am not going to be able to make this, y'all know that the last few months have been crazy for us up here (floods, et al.) and I sacrificed my Jeep funds to help recover. Right now I'm limited to short day trips. But I'll do my best to keep you all updated with what is going on for ODF and 4W2H.

Steve, as far as I can tell ODF is stil good to go. The ODF website and FB page haven't said anything to the contrary, but then again they may not have updated since the shutdown. It may help that Ocotillo Wells is a SVRA, so the state runs it vs. the feds.

I want to express my gratitude for all of you who in recent days volunteered to help out!

Unfortunately at this time I don't have much more information to offer, I'm not affiliated with 4W2H so I'm not entirely in the loop. I do believe in 4W2H's mission however, so I wanted to help spread the word. They are very busy and are underhanded so the information does come slow at times. Please continue to reach out to them, either by emailing Jen or through their website 4w2h.org.

Either way, just by being at Operation Desert Fun you guys will be helping vets. This event directly benefits Cal Diego Paralyzed Veterans Association so by virtue of being there you've already helped immensely. Volunteering with 4W2H or not, if you see them out there stop and talk to them! Maybe they will need some last minute help, but at the very least you'll be able to show some support and let the vets they brought out know we are grateful for there sacrifices. I've been on the receiving end of that, trust me it helps.

I'm grateful for your willingness to help, both as a veteran and a fellow Jeeper. You guys are amazing and that's why I reach out to you. Please keep reaching out to 4W2H and I promise you all that I will update as soon as I hear something. Thanks again!

Here is the email I just received from Jen in regards to the event.

Thank you for the email. I think we will have plenty of volunteers for ODF but we are always looking for more volunteers. If you'd like to come out with us and interested in volunteering please fill out our volunteer application I have attached it for you! You are more then welcome to come out and run the trail and camp with us I just cannot guarantee that we will have a veteran to ride with you! I can give you a call next week to go over the event details. But we are planning to go up Friday and camp both Friday and Saturday night.

Thank you for your interest and we look forward to meeting you!

No problem Joe. I'll let you know what I hear after she calls. Anyone know what the camping is like down there? I know it's mostly open camping right?
