A Turdhurdler Production: The 5th Semi Annual WF So Cal Meet n Greet

OK gang, I know what my work schedule will be for a while since I am staying at the same location. So, how does the last weekend of July sound for Big Bear?

I am thinking that if we get the same size or bigger turnout as we did for the Anza Borrego meet, we can have at least 2 groups of members for the run. One for the big guys that want to do John Bull and other extreme trails and a different run for those who prefer a more scenic and exploratory ride. To see how their Jeeps handle off road and what they are capable of.

I have been told that the campground we had last year was perfect and fit our needs wonderfully. It is Hanna Flats, the same camp ground as the May run is using.

So, post up everyone!!! Lets see if we can beat our last meet of 19 Jeeps.

Bring her along. We had a member bring his wife for the last meet during her b-day and they brought cup cakes and we all sang Happy Birthday to her.

That is a thought, she loves Big Bear and the forest. We have another trip being planned up there though and not sure of the date of that trip. Once I find out I can solidify our plans.

I see no reason I can't make that trip and I'll be happy to lead the John Bull group.

I'm actually doing John Bull this coming weekend, I'm leading my local club through John Bull & Gold Mountain this coming weekend. Yay.

P.S. There is apparently some new snow up in some parts above Big Bear Lake. The normal route (Van Dusen Canyon) from Big Bear up to the Holcomb Valley campground where we will be camped at while doing John Bull is closed due to snow and some rocks that fell onto part of it. Had to find an alternate route (Polique Canyon Road) from Big Bear to Holcomb Valley campground which is the nearest campground to John Bull.

If you can, pics of John bull would be awesome. Then we will all know what is ahead of us

No problem, I'll post 'em up. I'll try to take more pics than I normally do or better yet, I can hopefully just hand my camera to one of the non-driving passengers and ask them to take pics of everything for me. I have enough trouble driving, let alone driving and taking photos at the same time.

Maybe Ull get lucky with a big picture taker on the trip.

Hey here's a bunch of John Bull trail pics I Googled just for grins... some are clearly not really on John Bull but most are pretty good and give a good idea on some of its terrain.

At this time it looks like that weekend will work for me as well, especially if Beantown is bringing some more of that beer. It would be a day trip most likely for me but we will see as the time gets near.

I just got back from leading 15+ Jeeps through John Bull and it was awesome. It was freaking COLD at night though, it got down to 24 Friday night and it was 20 this morning when I woke up.

I'll post up pics as soon as I can. I didn't get a whole lot myself but there were plenty of other picture takers that promised to send me copies. We managed to get a nearly YJ with no lockers and 31" tires (4" lift though) through that was driven by one of my female club members so no whining from you less prepped Jeep owners. Plus a big full size Ford Bronco that I had to winch or strap over 50% of the obstacles.

If as trail leader the campsite is my decision, we'll be staying at Holcomb Valley Campground which is very close to John Bull. In fact, it's centered under the John Bull run itself. That's where I set us up for this weekend and it's a great campsite. No water but it has fire rings and restrooms. It's a real pretty campsite, kind of like Hanna Flats with all the big towering pine trees.

Here's a link to Holcomb Valley Campground... Big Bear Lake California Information - Search for a Business or Organization

Wait, here's a few pics afterall. I forgot I had already taken the camera into the house after getting home late this afternoon. The below pic showing the mud pit was taken on a road leading up to John Bull, we didn't really see much mud on John Bull itself. But that mud pit we went through was pretty bad, that pic does not do it justice. We had to snatch-strap several Jeeps through it. By the time we do JB, the mud should be dried up.

Ok so confirming we are talking arriving Big Bear's Holcomb Valley Campground Friday July 29th and doing JB Saturday July 30th. I will guide everyone to the campground which is very close to John Bull and 20-30 minutes off Highway 38 (aka North Shore Drive).

Just to confirm... those wanting to do John Bull need to have their Jeep's act together, John Bull is a difficult trail. Not on the order of Johnson Valley of course but its much more difficult than any of the other trails we from WF SOCAL have done together before.

I'm recommending a minimum of a 3" lift and 32" tires with at least one true locker strongly recommended. We had one lady with a YJ with a 4" lift with 31" tires and no locker get through but she struggled at times and needed a lot of spotting. Mud Terrain tires would be good too, no street tires but good aggressive All Terrain tires would be ok.

Also have front and rear tow hooks or their equivilents, smaller rigs will almost certainly need them. We'll have winches and tow straps so if you don't have a strap (you really should eventually get your own strap) or a winch, no worries.

And for those planning their routes to Big Bear, Highway 330 from I-10 to the mountains is CLOSED due to a big landslide some time back. You must take 38 which is the long way into Big Bear.

It's going to be a fun trip and for those not wanting to do John Bull, Gold Mountain is a good and much easier alternative that is close by. There are a lot of trails in the Big Bear area, John Bull is just the most difficult of them... do realize it's not super-difficult though if your Jeep is properly equipped.

Holcomb is a great campground and the one I always stage at. It can get hot in the day time, but plenty of shade. Still not sure if I can make it, but not discounting it yet.

I would love to do JB, but don't see the necessary mods done by then. So I will probably head a run through Gold Mtn again and if time permits, I also want to do White Mtn. From what I have read, White Mtn is more scenic than difficult, but also very long. About 30 miles.

Jerry, how far is the Holcomb Camp from the Hanna Flat campground we used last year? I have not made any definate plans for that yet, so just curious.
