I don't THINK the 5:1 would cost you anymore than the 4.3:1...and I am sure every little bit would help that 4 banger.

11:1 (I think) for the 4 speed might be a little overkill for a DD lol...but who knows

I was thinking 4.1 would give me the crawl speed I want for the Rubicon, Calico, Crazy Buttes etc. I do all the trails now, slower would just be a little easier. I have a couple months before Stan does the install. I'll chat with him a bit more..I dont need to go overboard and do more than I need for what I'll be crawling. I wish I could do the Hammers and Calico's gatekeeper etc..but I need to be able to drive home and go to work in the same Jeep.

I feel the pain...my jeep is currently a DD as well . I think if it were me, Id probably go with the 5:1 2spd...even having a 6 cylinder...you can always go faster, but going slower is harder.

I'll see what he says about it all. And of course, cost is a huge factor..is why I have to wait. Even by the time I see him, a lot of the money will be pulled out of savings for it.

You never know what you will be climbing after your trip to the Buttes, you are getting closer to the Hammers.. I had been running the 4.1 with the 5 speed manual for awhile and you will see a huge improvement. I just had to give mine up to do the auto swap, so I may be looking at a Atlas down the road as well. Like you I have read some stories about the Tera low giving out, just not sure how they were being used...

I don't know as much about transfers cases as I do about other Jeep stuff/mods, but from what I've heard, the TeraLows were a problem for DD Jeeps..and there was other little things that went wrong with them. Nonetheless, it was enough to steer me away from them. Besides, I really only like to put the best or closest thing to it that I can afford, on my Jeep. She needs to last a while and when I wheel her, I wheel pretty hard. Don't really do a lot of fireroad type stuff. It's always the rocks. (not that I'm opposed to scenic stuff

And over the years, I have seen the intensity progression when I wheel. I've always said I will never do the hammers in this Jeep. I can't afford to break it..and then I think..well,maybe I can just go check out some of it Self Control in wheeling my jeep= not so great.

My jeep is a 5 speed manual, 2,5L, 4.56 gearing. 33x12.50 MTR's, lifted 3" with a 1" BL, ARBs F/R and all the rest of the Currie etc goodies...I thought with that set up, 4.1 would be what I'd need. I don't want to get more than I need. But like I said, I really don't know much about it...and is why I contacted Stan I have an awesome mechanic here..but he is VERY expensive (and worth it) but I try to go to him only when I need to. I am willing to drive 2.5 hours to get to Stan's shop!

Yeah, I agree with you that I want my Jeep to handle the highway as well as the trail, if not these decisions would be easy. Nobody want to go 45 on the fwy at 3500 rpms so its important to get the right balance.

As for the Buttes, its been on my short list far too long and I plan to check it out in Feb...

I love Calico, I love BB..Cougar Buttes is a completely different animal and just as addicting if not more. Not to mention, I think more difficult; if you're not bypassing anythng. There is A Lot out there.
