Sounds fun, though I am thinking of camping out at Afton Canyon Friday night and running the Mojave Road west to east.

Afton is amazing! I love it out there! Haven't gotten to spend a lot of time but wow! We went to Razor rd doing the dirt bike thing only enough gas in the bikes to get there and back. Couldn't really explore. And then just a short run in and show my guy the hills just past the wild life refuge, and out after a trip into Vegas. But what I have gotten to see its beautiful! If you aren't doing anything crazy would ya all like some company I don't wanna camp in the cold but if you aren't leaving for trail super early I can head out in the am.

Yeah I will keep you posted if I go out there. I love that area especially camping in the campground when the UP trains go by.

That sounds great. How far down the Mojave Road do you plan on going?

Hi,

I am going to bring enough stuff to do the entire thing just in case I get a wild hair to do the trail west to east. (good warm sleeping bag, lots of water and food, extra gas in my aux. tank, some firewood, etc)

My plan is to pre-run the trail and then plan another trip with a group to see all the sights and historical stuff along the way (all the forts and petroglyphs)

I've got the book Dennis Casebier wrote which is the defacto guide to traverse the 130 mile trail and not get lost. (see below)

Mojave Road Guide - DesertUSA Store

I've done the entire road before twice in the past from the Avi Casino and then ending up at the end at Afton Canyon. (however I was not leading the group )

Never run it west to east so should be fun.

Sucks for me.

I like wandering too...going off the beaten path allows me to find myself, and other interesting things

Carrying an emergency blanket (tin foil looking thing) and a poncho wouldn't hurt either (ya never know). They are cheap and small so it can go into your first aid kit. Rule of thumb on water is a gallon of water per person per day. Snacks go for high energy items (trail mix, granola bars, etc). For tools, a multitool and a collapsable shovel will go a long way. And finally make sure you have stuff to change a tire with.

We jeepers do tend to overpack. Honestly you can fit everything you REALLY need into a backpack.
Always keep a pair of good work gloves in your Jeep and never leave home without some type of head covering. I prefer a straw hat over a do-rag. The do-rag retains the moisture and the straw hat allows air to pass through and cool your head. And don't forget sunscreen.

Hey this flu kicked my ass.

Anyway I am better and really thinking of doing a Mojave Road run this weekend, or at the very least part of it.

I'm up for anything desert exploring though.

I got Sunday off so it's either run away in the yj for a day in the desert or be good and replace some wheel cylinders on the MB.

I suspect I'll wake Sunday morning with every intention of working on the MB but somewhere during my first cup of coffee my plans will change.

Well this past weekend I ran the Mojave Rd west to east and the conditions were absolutely perfect.

Would love to run it again in the next few weeks before it starts to get too hot out there.

Hi

Yes, we got out to Afton/basin rd Friday night and camped.

Have to hustle a little bit to do it in a weekend. 3 or 4 days would be much better bu for this trip my intention was to pre-run it to see conditions.

Saturday morning around 8am we got started and picked up the mojave rd at afton canyon. Hit the two water crossings and headed east.

It was great. I am ready to do it again. Found a great campsite on the way too.

Temps were 70's to around 86 during the day the entire trip. Couldn't ask for better stuff.

Soda lake was dry and passable.

You need to bring extra gas. I have an AEV aux tank that I used (we did a lot of exploring off the road)

I absolutely love this trip and have my jeep set up perfectly for it.

I know there are some hard core rock crawlers out there and not knocking that interest but this sort of trip is outright awesome.

Anytime, let me know the trip is lots of fun and there is terrain for everyone.

Tons of history and backcountry exploring too.

It's a pretty awesome place, western edge of the mojave road. I'd imagine that the water crossings are pretty nice right now with all the rain we've been getting in the desert.

Just take the 15 like you're going to Vegas and get off on Afton Rd. There is a decent campground there too!
