Truckhaven is about an hour or so away, and San Berdoo Rd to Joshua Tree is closer.. several others I know are nearby, but I dont know what they are called.. Some cool stuff to see at Salton Sea if you're into just exploring.. No matter where you go, it's going to be warm!
Update here what you decide (i'm sure you'll get a lot of input) - I may come along.
Berdoo Canyon to Joshua Tree is a great run. It starts out of Indio. Another trail (fire road) is Santa Rosa Mtn. Out of Palm Desert and south up Hwy 74. It is an easy drive with some great views at the top. And also about 25 degrees cooler. I will be watching this thread and might be able to join. Craig
August 9th in the Palm Springs area? Do you have any idea how how it'll be there that time of year lol? What, like 110-115 degrees or thereabouts? I'd go out there with you but not in August.

As an aside about getting frigging hot, Google news mentioned a heat wave going on in Iran right now. Can you believe it has gotten to 165 heat index there in the last few day? Iran city hits suffocating heat index of 165 degrees, near world record - The Washington Post
I cannot think of a better place for the heat to go!
