I'm going to keep an eye out for when you guys run Holcomb.

I'm also trying to find the time here soon to go on a hunt for a secret Deep Creek camping spot that my dad and I used to go to a lot when I was a kid. If memory serves me correct, it's like a more challenging version of Devil's Hole. It's been about 20 years since I've been to it so, like I said, it'll be a hunt.

We started from the desert ... We went up from Bowen Ranch Road and Coxey ... pretty sure we ended up on 3N59A before splitting off down a draw to get to the Creek ... There is a road that I want to check out that might be it ...

Not trying to hijack this thread ... lol ... like I said this is like a more challenging version of devil's hole and I figured this would be the group of guys from the forum to share it with

So PM me if this is something you might be interested in...and I can give you the details on the trails...

Thanx SteveO!

Just got this email from IE4W. Everyone signed up for Holcomb should've gotten it:

Quote:
Forest Fest is almost here – and as always the last minute crunch. This is the first year that we have had to file for a formal permit and we are still trying to iron out some last minute details with the Forest Service. Most of the restrictions/recommendations are minor and we should be able to modify our normal plan to accommodate – the one restriction that has been put on us regarding Holcomb Creek we have been told is not negotiable – and if you are one of the folks receiving this email that means you probably have one of the previously assigned spots.

We requested the usual 25 vehicles per trail and have been granted that across most of the forest – and that is the maximum we have been allowed. Holcomb Creek is the one exception and we have been limited to 2 runs each day with a maximum of 10 vehicles per trail – we had 1 run for Friday – 2 for Saturday and 1 for Sunday with a total of 100 vehicles – since we only had one run on Friday and Sunday we had 25 vehicles each day – 22 guests and 3 trail crew – we can drop that 2 trail crew on each and take 8 guests which allows us 16 instead of 22 – so we lost 6 slots each Friday and Sunday – The big problem is Saturday we had 44 guest slots and that is now 16 total we have lost 28 slots on the Saturday Holcomb Creek trails.

We have added an additional Historical run on Saturday which will free up some of the other trails that had requested the Historical Run but was full and we will add another difficult run for which we will take volunteers onsite – this is similar to the plan we had to implement 3 years ago when Holcomb was totally closed and we could not use at all so with any luck it will work again. In addition we have already closed registration and we still have approx. 30 open slots on the existing trails so we should be able to accommodate all and still offer some choices.

I will begin moving people over the weekend based on when the registrations were received and paid for as well as the 2nd and 3rd choices that were listed – If you really have a preference let me know and I will try to accommodate as much as possible. And if you want to volunteer for something else I am sure someone else that may have never run Holcomb will appreciate.

Sorry for the inconvenience but it could have been worse – some events are only getting the permits a couple of days in advance – at least we had a couple weeks and some time to make adjustments.

Yeah I got it too...I'm sure everyone signed up on Holcomb got it. I am considering giving up my spot and running a different trail. Ive run Holcomb twice in the past month and BB is easy for me to hit. Some of these guys came a distance and may have never done Holcomb.

Yeah, I'd consider another trail. Curious what the options will be. Most of the trails are pretty full. It'd be cool if they offered a hard trail that isn't one of the 'usuals'.

I might end up giving up my Holcomb spot if they'll give me a refund. I don't know if ill have time to get my broken axle seal fixed by then. Pretty easy for us to put together a "locals" run another time.

I replied to the email and mentioned some of us might be willing to switch to something else.

Horsethief, Gold Mtn, and Motino are options he mentioned. Motino is an 'unofficial' run since it's not technically part of the forest and requires 35" and f/r lockers.

I might switch to Motino since I've been wanting to run it. If anyone else is interested, let me know.

EDIT: He just replied: The group to Motino will only be 10-15 Jeeps, so let me know if you want in. I'm probably going to switch to it.

I lead a run of 17 rigs through Matino wash last weekend for Hi Dezert Roundup ....good times!....to bad I didn't see any of you guys out there...
We were able to raised some money for the fight to keep are lands open....the very thing your being faced with right here....Holcomb creek is in a critical burned area and also crosses a creek.....just the thing a tree hugger needs to make their point ....

We all need to get active in this fight...

Lookers f/r puts me out of the Motino run. Just as well. I have too many clearance issues on my jeep that need attention.

Forest Fest seems to be one of the largest fund raising Jeep events in area to help keep trails open in BB. The raffle is huge and I will be there

That's a good trail Rick, the only problem with Motino is the drive...That one is not on the board, I wonder if there are any more that aren't listed?

Yeah, he said it's an 'unpublished' run and won't be listed. It's only being offered because they need some options to move the Holcomb overflow to.

The only others he mentioned were Horsethief, Gold Mtn, and a Historical run.

How far is it to Motino? I do want to get back to look at the vendors so I can hopefully see some front bumpers. I'm undecided, but have it down to a few.

Definately! Id rate Mottino way above Holcomb for fun. Less scenic than HC and the drive there sucks, but its a good time for sure.

That's a good call Rick, you will like the trail. I just don't know if I want to drive over, what time are they starting it?

I'm going to check with Mike and see if they still need people to drop.

Awesome! I've been wanting to run it since Bill, Dan and a few of you guys ran it. I figure going with people from IE4W will be a good way to do it for the first time.

He didn't say.

Said they're doing a test run of it tomorrow and that they will most likely have it as an unofficial/unpublished option to the overflow that are getting rescheduled. They are going to only allow Jeeps with 35"+ and f/r lockers.

How long is the drive over there from Big Bear?
