Big Bear, This Saturday 8/16

Hi everybody, I've been out for a while and itching to wheel.
I know it's a short notice, but I'm thinking about running either Dishpan and Holcomb, or John Bull.
meet at the trail head around 9:00 or 9:30.
Is anyone up to it.

Joe.

Coincidence, I think NOT. I m actually going to be up there for the weekend. The wife and I are going to cruise around Holcomb Valley and check it out since we've never been. Which run would be best for a novice keeper and a VERY ROOKIE wife?? And what would the duration be??

Go to the discovery center and get a good Map. Jacoby canyon is a short trail, about 40 minutes with only two obstacles and is accessed from Holcomb valley road. I did it without issue in my stock rubicon.

If it's your wife's first time and you just basically want a bumpy dirt road I like going back on 2n01 and exploring around the rose mine area. It's all pretty mellow back there, I don't think there area any black diamond trails. It's past the lake on Hwy 38. I take my kids back there to shoot bow and arrows into the old mine tailings. You can take a lunch and picnic and spend several hours back there. It's also never crowded since most people stick to Holcomb valley.

A lot of little trails back there. I always lay tracks with my GPS. I'm not the greatest map reader and it's easy to get backwards. I got a little lost a month ago up there and relied on my GPS tracks to get me back.

Ahhh Marble canyon... when the heat abates we will have to go do this again. Very fun place.

Steve it's been a while. Unfortunately I can not do Sundays. I'm always on the look out for your runs just in case one of them happens on a Saturday.
Have fun Buddy.

Sorry I missed the M&G. I was looking forward to it, but something more urgent came up.
I know you will be having a ball running the Rubicon. Be safe and have fun. See you on the next one.

X2 on what SoCalJK said. JB and HC are both black diamond trails and are not really ideal for a Rookie.
Have fun.

Hi Mark and Candy...have fun up there. Don't beat on your jeep to hard..lol. I gave mine a really good workout up that way. At least the water wasn't to deep...I didn't get my feet wet.

I miss you guys to. It's been a while. I've been so busy lately and do not have enough time to go out.
I wish I was able to make it with you guys. I know you are going to have great time.
Just be safe and we want to see pics and videos.
Joe.

Hey Rick, no problem. I can not make it next week. The following week hunting season starts.
Maybe will catch you on another day. By the way are you wheeling your JKU even though you have it up for sale.

Thanks for the 411. Sure saw a lot of Jeeps rolling around up in the area. The wife and I swung up 2N09 to 3N16 checking out the gold fever trail sites and a few others. We ended that run at Hwy 18 by the recycle plant. We then hiked the Cougar Crest trail for a few miles out of the Discovery center. After grabbing an ice cream dessert or two and some misc supplies from Von's, we ran 2N23 back over the hill to our spot at South Fork Campground. I think it was a great start for her. Hopefully I can get her out on a few more trails with a little rock crawling soon

Ha, I was goofing around on 3N16 Saturday as well. In the evening around 230 ish. Glad you had fun. There are ALOT of trails up there to see and do. I also rode with a friend on Gold Mountain Sunday. Definitely don't try that one without a group. A month ago it was difficult but doable in a Stock JKUR. The rain totally washed alot of the trail out and the rock got bigger !!! A lift and people to help are a must now. It earned its Black Diamond rating.

Hmmm, sounds like next weeks run (8/23), is going to become interesting. A lot of those planning to attend are bringing the wife (or GF), because it was supposed to be easy. I can hardly wait to see how they're going to handle this situation.

It's always raining up there. Seems like every trip I've made up there this summer has had rain and thunderstorms. It just adds to the fun.

I am totally up to (and for) the challenge, but a group that size is going to be a hoot. The last time I ran with that many, was several years ago at Calico. We made it just about 3 miles in 6 hours. Thank goodness I smoked my rear dif and had to leave early. Some of those folks may still be out there..............LOL

Yes it will be interesting. Amazing how the run on the 23rd grew in the number of jeeps. But we never rated it as easy.

"Stock vehicles with a little lift and maybe some spotting over a couple obstacles on Gold mountain but other than that just a nice day in Big Bear"

That sounds like an invite to an easy trail run to me.

Believe me, I'll keep up, but can hardly wait for the reactions from some of those newbees and first timers with the little woman in the shotgun seat. Gonna be interesting at the very least......LOL

Phil, I ended up running GM and then the scenic route 3N16, because the wifey decided to come along. She hates rock crawling. She says her back and neck will end up killing her from all the bouncing around.
I figured starting with GM will be fine. She was cursing all the way until we got to the rock garden. She got out and walked that section. I was able to convince her to get back in and that the rest of the way was easy.
The trail was sure interesting up to that point. It will be challenging with a big group especially if there are stock JKUs.
Just be safe and have fun.
Joe

I don't recall my bride ever bailing out on me. She is a real trooper. My friend's ex wouldn't even ride in the same Jeep with his when we did Calico like ten years ago. Some people just don't get it, I suppose. I think those two are both walking these days.................LOL
