California OHV fees and permits?

Maybe this is a silly question but I feel a little confused as to the california OHV permits. I see red/green sticker fees, SRVA pass fees, adventure pass fees. Can anyone explain what I need for my jeep? I think all I need is an OHV day/year permit and maybe an adventure pass? I assume that if you were to run miller trail and come out in hungry valley you would need a pass to be able to pass through it?

green/red stickers are for dirt bikes, quads and the such. as long as your jeep is registered and insured no need to worry.

adventure pass applies to any vehicle parked in a California state park. for example, if you go offroad in big bear no adventure pass is required. once you park on a trail in big bear and walk away, you need it displayed on your vehicle. they are required when you park at a hiking trail head, yellow post campsite, etc etc

Just to add to what Beantown said...

Adventure passes are $5 a day...or you could get an annual pass for $30. There is also an interagency pass for $80 annually which is good for all federally funded parks including the national forests ie SBNF. If you happen to be military you can actually get that one for free.

Here is a link to the USDA's website explaining the passes and where to get them if you are interested:

Also for the annual Forest Adventure Pass you can get a secondary annual pass at a discounted price for another vehicle if you ever take two cars up there. I did this for both of my Jeeps.

I read recently on MJR forum that a few months back that you didnt need a forest adventure pass anymore, at least in southern california. That somehow they could write you a ticket, but couldnt enforce it. I know i was up at john bull a month ago and was out of my jeep drinking a beer, a Ranger pulled up , asked was I drinking and driving, I said no, he didnt even check for an adventure pass. I have never bought one and have never gotten a ticket.

I recently asked on that forum about it... go back and check it again. The judgement was in Arizona, and it's very specific. Essentially it talked about needing an adventure pass only if you use the FS facilities (Bathrooms, picnic tables...stuff like that).

As for where the money goes... I'm sure you've all been reading about this fock story.
