Catalytic converter question

I have a 99' wrangler sport that needs a new cat. Question is has anyone replaced their cat and and if so with what cat?

I just wanna make sure before I go spend dealership amounts of money on the part.

Thanks.

Most muffler shops will be able to supply you with a 50 state legal cat for a lot less than the dealer one. Some people like the Banks cat back system, but I have no personal expereince with it so unfortantly I have no feedback for you.

I ordered a high flow one off e-bay. Not sure how much, and installed it myself when I did new headers and exhaust. That was a few years ago, but you can find them there.

Well none of you must live in California because a replacement cat for a 99' wrangler is a dealer part only and at 810$ not cheap.

And no muffler shops even show a cat available for my jeep. The guy at the muffler shop also said if I were to put on a universal cat, that the smog shop will check for a dealer part number on the cat because they know from their smog system that there are no aftermarket cats available.

Hey Farlok, I found the same problem for my 98. Plaza Mufflers in Santa Ana was recommended to me. I went there, he replaced it for $195.00 and I had no trouble at the smog station. It was stamped (not sure what stamp). I have to say I did have it smogged in Coachella at a hole in the wall smog station (might have made the difference). I keep the Jeep in Borrego Springs. No smog stations there.

Hope this helps, Fred

Yeah.. I hear ya guys. Well I have 2 brand new magna flow cats sitting in my garage so as soon as my new cat-back system gets here I'll install it all. I guess the worst thing that could happen is I could fail the visual part of a smog test.

Thanks again for the reassurance on this matter.

Thanks for the link but they don't have any 6cyl. info.

I've decided if I can get a really good deal (under 400$) through a friend that is good friends with a parts manager, then I'll get a factory cat. If I can't get a deal then I'll try a universal one.

I have a 98 Wrangler (6 cyl) and live in the bay area. Recently my cat went bad and after hours of research I ended up on the CA air board website which lead me to this...
Application search

Slightly over $200 shipped to my door, another $90 for install. And CA legal so no hassles from the smoggies
