Cleveland National Forest Pics Santa Ana Mountains

I had originally planned to just go and see if the gate was open on Black Star Canyon RD; It's not. It turned into a 7 hour adventure because all the trail gates are locked up by the Forestry service. And there aint no legal way around the gates. (great civil engineering.) Skyline and Leonard rds are all closed on the north side of the main divide road. I went up maple springs rd out of Silverado canyon and had to back track up sky line and then all the way from Sierra Peak. Next week is Lake Elsinor to Irvine over the Main Divide RD.

My stock 2013 Sport JKU did great. It's an automatic with 3.21 gearing and stock tires. I never mod anything until it doesn't do what I want it to. Main Divide isn't difficult but it does have a few hairy spots every now and again.

I did the same route today that you mentioned starting from Hwy 74 to main divide then to Santiago peak and down to maple springs. I had 3 buddies take their 2wd mid-travel toyota prerunners and they handled the main divide with zero issues

That end of the mountain isn't too bad. I did most of it in 2wd the first time I was up. 4wd just makes it easier and 4Lo makes it really easy when you are coming down. My leg got tired of using the brakes the first time I went up there. The north end of the road that dead ends at Sierra Peak get a little hairy in spots. There are a couple of Pine tree groves on that end and Beeks place at the Black Star Canyon and Skyline road intersection. But you have to trek all the way back to Bedford road to get down into Corona or all the way to maple springs to get to OC.

Thanks for the update on the gates. Someone recently mentioned to me that they're back to giving out keys at Skyline- but not sure. There were 2 cops and 2 forest rangers there this weekend. We started hiking off Foothill so we weren't close enough to see if they were there for a reason/incident- or if they're stationed there to monitor the gate.

I had heard something about kids partying and people dumping stolen cars down the canyons. It is a really nice end of the Main Divide road too. Lots of little meadows and rolling hills up there.
