Diablo drop off condition?

Last I heard the DD was in bad condition. Anyone been there lately? How is it?

We were there about 4 weeks ago. We did it up and down and it was easy enough that a JKUR did it in 2WD going up.

Wow! Did it look like the park service graded it? Last I heard it was severely rutted.

I think this is the one of DustyDave coming up in 2WD. Lots of pic's but only this one of the drop off. It's not to steep at the top.

We did it over Thanksgiving, it was rutted out and very fun. Broken Axle Gulch, which is between the drop off and Fish Creek, was the most challenging it has been in years. The rains washed away a lot of the sand and exposed a lot of boulders. It would not surprise me if the Park Service came in from the Southwest and graded it. I'll have to go check it out.

That's the lower drop off, they normally don't grade that, to narrow for the blade. The upper sandy part was rutted out, people were going around the ruts to the left making a new trail. The Rangers don't like that!

The upper takes you to a plateau, then to a trail down a canyon towards the mud caves, Hollywood and Vine and the highway. No pumpkin patch.

Ooops your right. The punkin patch was somewhere else on another day there. we were there for 4 days so I kinda lost track. The sign said diablo drop off but I don't remember it being to terribly hard. Maybe 1 to 2 foot ruts and moguls.

My wife says that was on the plateau where we had to fix Daves T/case cable. The sign was on this level and a bunch of jeeps were there watching people climb it. And Yeah there were two tracks at the top to take. The one to the right as you climb was a new one.

Apparently the "one way" sign is no longer there? The was one back in the early 2000's. People shouldn't even be climbing that section.

To make sure we are talking about the same drop off. Is it past the "Squeeze?"

Just past the Jeep Squeeze is Heart Attack Hill

I think they are talking about another spot down there. You are thinking of Heart Attack Hill I believe.

Yup, SCCAFIRE is talking about Heart Attack Hill. The Diablo Drop Off has two sections the lower in Gunner's picture and then the upper which is mostly a sand hill that gets offset holes in it (great for articulation). At the top of that sand hill is the plateau. The drop off that has the "ONE WAY" sign is off the 78 heading towards the "Slot". That has the same offset holes as the upper Diablo. We did the Slot last weekend, lots of fun and great scenery. It ends up in San Felipe wash.

We might run from the 78, through the Slot to San Felipe Wash and across Ocotillo Wells to the training are for the TDS show. Anyone interested?

This is the slot right. It was just before the Drop Off. There were no sign's at the bottom of the Drop Off only at the top. And at the top was a sign that says go down only. Lot of good that does when we just climbed it.

No Gunner, That is Broken Axle Gulch, below the lower Diablo Drop Off on the way out to Fish Creek. The Slot is Northeast of there above the Ocotillo Wells ranger station. We have a house in Borrego Springs and do runs from the often. I'll post up another one before it gets hot, you will have to come out.

A saturday run sounds like fun. Where and when? I'm not familiar with that area but I have Google maps on my I pad.

If you came out of that area on Split Mountain Road and came to a dead end at HWY 78 where it meets the Ocotillo Wells Airport then you were 15-20 minutes from Borrego Springs. It's to the North. I'll post up a run before it gets hot. Looks like April with TDS and The Meet and Greet.
