Flood Relief Fundraiser Run #2 – Inscription Canyon – 9/15

Run #1 was a success, we raised almost $400 for the school! Here is a second chance to help out!

The Cause – Lewis Elementary Disaster Relief
On August 25th, the worst flash floods in 31 years, created by Tropical Storm Ivo’s monsoon rains washed through my community and caused an enormous amount of damage to one of our schools, Lewis Elementary School. So much damage in fact, that the District Superintendant said it looked like a warzone when he toured the aftermath and has closed it indefinitely for repairs.

Most of the structural and equipment damage will be covered by the school’s insurance; however, the majority of the school supplies came out of the pockets of the teachers and the parents. These things will not be covered by insurance, and the school will need some help to provide supplies for the students while they are displaced as well as when they are allowed back into their classes.

The Run
Sunday, September 15th
8AM - Meet Peggy Sue's (Ghost Town/Yermo Rd)
9AM - Roll time
4PM - Estimated time of return

CB Channel 24

This is another scenic fun trip designed with everyone in mind; a stock Jeep, novice driver, and family friendly (and encouraged) run through the Black Canyon area north of Barstow. The highlight of this run will be the petroglyphs at Inscription Canyon, but I also plan on stopping at Rainbow Basin, Coolgardie Mining Camp, Superior Dry Lake, Indian Caves, Scout's Cove, Black Canyon stage coach depot and wells.

Yup, this is a Sunday, I'll be returning from DC on Saturday. This will give those of you who want to run Calico on Saturday the chance to do so and still join me on Sunday.

Requirements:
Family Friendly = NO ALCOHOL
Serviceable Full Size Spare
First Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher
Lots of water
Full tank of gas

Conditions:
Weather we are looking at sunny and low to mid 90s. The road conditions will vary from maintained dirt roads to soft sand and rocky areas that may required 4WD in spots. The recent rains likely washed some of the roads away so we may run into some off camber spots.

How to Help
Donate at the run; I will take cash or check and drop it off with the school’s PTA president. Make checks payable to “Lewis Elementary PTA” with “Lewis Elementary Disaster Relief” in the memo. DO NOT PUT THE WORD “FUND” ANYWHERE on the check, I was told this has to do with banking and legal issues. If you supply me with a self-addressed stamped envelope with your donation, the PTA will send you a receipt for tax purposes.

Can’t make either run, but still want to donate? PM me!

One more thing you can do is vote for Lewis Elementary during Target’s “Give with Target” promotion. Every vote for the school Target will donate $1 in supplies, up to $10,000. Here is a direct link to the school’s entry:

Thanks mostly in part to the Misfits and their members, the first run raised nearly $400 for Lewis Elementary School. I had the pleasure of dropping the donations off to the PTA president today! She was very grateful and provided some insight on how the school will use these donations.

The school just spent $1000 to replace the white boards that the students use in the classrooms. They are also needing to replace bookshelves and books that were lost. Individual teachers are also replacing items that they purchased for their classrooms out of pocket, things like rugs, toys, and books. Every little bit is going to help things get back to normal for the students.

The second run is going to go through Black Canyon, Coolgardie, Inscription Canyon, and Superior Dry Lake.

Update

I spent Thursday and Friday volunteering at the school helping get stuff moved into the temporary classrooms and getting the classrooms set up for the students. As it sits, the 2nd graders start next week, and the 1st graders start the week after. Not sure the the kindergarten kids get to go back because they will be on a different campus.

Glad to have you with us Rob! We already have 4 rigs making it out for this, and I'm hoping we get the same kind of turnout we got the last time.

This is a super easy run but there are still lots of cool things to see! On the route I have planned we will see Rainbow Basin, Coolgardie Mining Camp, Inscription Canyon (as well as lesser known petroglyph sites), Superior Dry Lake, Indian Caves, Scout's Cove, and the Black Canyon stage coach Depot and wells.

Joe, I sent you a little something today so next week you should get it.

I don't know if you guys have Rotary Club in your town or nearby, but Rotary does a lot of fund raising events to help in situations like this. Look online or check with nearby chamber if commerce offices.

Mike was president of our chapter and he authorized quite a few fund raising bbq's for the schools.
Just a suggestion

Thanks for the donation! I'll pass the rotary club suggestion on to the PTA president, I'm almost positive they have one in Barstow.

Did they put them in FEMA trailers or what? Because that would still be better than an open hanger bay. Lol

Nope ... the state is making them use "Field Act" certified portables ... they had to get shipped in for the most part ... we already had a few and the 2nd graders started in them today

Too much formaldehyde in the FEMA trailers I guess. Okay for Louisiana flood victims, but not California school kids. Lol

Wish I could go but 35's, no lift, and stock flares don't mix well with wheeling.

Bob, I'm not even going to disconnect. The only flexing we may have to do is if we come across a road that washed out.

Abe, hope you make it out again!

Sounds good Doug. Too bad you won't be able to make it though.

Also, just a quick note for everyone coming tomorrow regarding the petroglyphs. There has been a lot of vandalism over the last year or so ... some jackasses took chunks out of the rocks stealing some of the most famous petroglyphs. These have been there for hundreds perhaps thousands of years and we need to be respectful of that. Pictures are awesome for memories. If you want a more physical souvenir brings some paper and crayons and make rubbings of the petroglyphs. Thanks!

Alright folks, just like last time. 0800-0900 breakfast/meet-up at Peggy Sue's. I'll leave Peggy Sue's for the trailhead at 0900.

We'll airdown at the trailhead which is Fossil Bed Rd and Irwin Rd. Definitely want a full tank of gas for this one.
