How do I talk my wife into riding with me? She hates scary trails with cliffs, and hills. Any suggestions?

Tell you Wife that I took my Wife on the "Mission Impossible" Trail down in Baja California last year (5/2011) which was a real cliff hanger. I towed another Jeep back up it when he started having fuel pump issues. I was pulling 3 Wheelers up all of the waterfalls with this loaded down Jeep behind me.

Joshua Tree is a real cakewalk with only one section that lasts maybe 5 minutes. She can just close her eyes if she likes. My Wife doesn't get scared in Joshua Tree, and the worst is real minor in comparison.

I logged your info from this thread on my roster. I just wanted to have an idea of who is confirmed and who isn't sure, etc. This will be a big job for the HAM guys on this run since CBs only reach line of sight and for the first part of this run, the canyons tend to close in, and can be tight in places.

This would be perfect if it weren't on a Saturday! My husband works graveyard shift all weekend. He doesn't do zombie mode very well. My patient's son was just talking about those trails leading from Coachella through Joshua Tree and said it was something we had to do, especially seeing as it's in our own backyard. We live 10 mins outside of Palm Springs. We'd need to grab a CB radio, but I know those can be found real cheap.

Maybe I can convince my husband to suffer through it, just for one day. Any persuasive ideas? My feminine wiles only work to an extent. When a man wants to sleep, there's not much to stop him...

Jacqui,

Thanks for considering this run. Its a very fun one, that isn't technical that you can drive and let him rest. You could split from the group midway as we travel to Old Dale Road - with you and your family continuing on towards the I-10 fwy (near Mecca). This would get you guys back home at about 2 p.m.

A CB Radio can be purchased at Love's Truck Stop on Dillon Road and installed within a couple of hours at any stereo installation shop.

I still want to go, but have to figure some stuff out. Was out in Ocotillo Wells over the New Years and my clutch decided it was time to go out. Had it towed to a shop and is being worked on as I type. If everything goes as planned, it'll be ready this evening or tomorrow morning. Are there any motels or camp sites near the meet up spot? I'm in Palm Desert now waiting on the jeep.

That's why I love jeepers. willing to let a total stranger stay with them. I'll probably end up going with super 8. that's not too expensive. I'll let you know by tomorrow if I'm in for sure or not.

Run Reminder information

Yahoo! Groups

This Saturday, I will be leading a Joshua Tree 4WD run which will have us out from 9 a.m. until about sunset. Highlights will include;
  • The historic Berdoo Canyon Road which at one time housed Berdoo Camp - a conglomerate of buildings including; dormitories, a mess hall, and even a town store and 35 bed hospital. Berdoo Camp - N33deg.50.06' W116deg.08.74'
  • The Little San Bernardino Mountains tunnel which lies directly under Berdoo Camp which lies 2,042ft. underground - part of the California aqueduct project.
  • The picturesque Pleasant Valley - providing views of the nearby Salton Sea to the south.
  • Views of the Joshua Tree - the largest of the yuccas, and member of the lily family which range in height from 15 to 40 feet and live between 100 to 300 years, which were named by early Mormon visitors to California.
  • Views of the Ocotillo (or 'Coach-whip'). In fact, Native Americans ate Ocotillo flowers like sweet candy back in the day.
  • Mission Well in the Pinto Basin (along Old Dale Road) where Native Americans found food sources along what was once a shallow lake, but now houses a helicopter landing pad.
  • Former California mining sites along Old Dale Road.
  • Berdoo Canyon Trail ascending from an elevation of 900 to 4,400 ft. elevation as we enter Pleasant Valley within the National Park. We will continue onward from the opposite end of the park out to Highway 62 via Old Dale Road and Gold Crown Road.

Itinerary:
Beginning along Dillon Road in the reknown desert festival town of Coachella, CA - we will drive our Jeeps, pickup trucks and SUVs up Dillon Road - a road set up in the early 1930s to access work sites along the California aqueduct project (which delivers water from Parker Dam in Arizona to Los Angeles, CA).

We will arrive at Dillon Road where we will air our tires down, disconnect our Jeep anti--swaybars, and prepare for a day of mild four wheeling and sight seeing under projected sunny skies, but cool temperatures.

As we complete the one-way Geology Tour Road, we will stop for lunch (at approx. 11:30 - 12:30) near the impressive Squaw Tank - a Native American campsite filled with Monzogranite boulders containing deep pockets used for grinding seeds - perfect for setting up for our lunch!

Next, we will drive across the park to Pinto Basin Road (also known as El Dorado Mine Road), 6 miles north of Cottonwood Campground, where we will drive up Old Dale Road where it will continue to Gold Crown Road where it intersects with Highway 62. But, before reaching pavement, we will take a fun detour, and play on a small sand dune and maybe cross an optional mud hole.

Communications:
We will utilize CB Channel 22 along I-10, up to the meeting place.
HAM operators will be on this run - one of whom uses the Call Sign: KJ6KHK and can be accessed using 146.46 MHz Simplex.
Please make sure that your CB radio is in good operating condition prior to this run.

Park Regulations:
Be sure to carry $15 in the event that our group gets a visit from the Rangers, and require us to drive to one of the kiosks and purchase a park pass.

Alcohol Policy:
**Please do not bring any alcoholic drinks on this run. We will need to keep a fast pace due to the size of this group, and factoring whether or not drivers and/or passengers are no longer 'buzzed' will only slow us down. NYE was so yesterday.

Weather:
Afternoon temps should peak into the upper 50s. Please bring a jacket and dress warm since our noon-time lunch stop will be above 4,000 ft. elevation.

Gasoline:
There will be no gasoline available after we leave the Love's parking lot. Check California Gas Prices - Find Cheap Gas Prices in California [Coachella, CA] for the lowest prices near our starting place.

Lunch and Dinner:
Please be sure to bring plenty of food and water for your day on the trail. We will begin lunch at approximately 11:30 a.m. and be ready to drive at 12:30 p.m. Our plan will be to arrive on pavement before 5 p.m. so that our tires will be aired up and anti swaybars reconnected with sunlight. Meet us for dinner at Santana's Mexican Food (Fresh MXN) - Santana's Mexican Food -
Their meals are more than McDonalds, but less than Denny's. It's not exactly the same quality as Fresh MXN in San Diego, but close enough for the price.
73680 Sun Valley Drive Twentynine Palms, CA 92277

Any additional questions?
Cell Phone: (951) 255-1589

See you there!

I am sooooo stoked looking forward to this day. Took the wife up Berdoo about 10 miles. She said she won't go Saturday, because of the pics I posted of Old Dale Road (a run I did last month), but she'll make me a nice lunch, and have a great dinner waiting for my return. See you Saturday!

I just did Berdoo Canyon Rd on a whim in my wife's Xterra on NYE. It was fun, not too difficult, but I cracked the stupid plastic mudflaps that hang down behind the rear wheels. I think it would have been a cakewalk in the Jeep. Have fun!

You guys are gonna have some real fun. I think this one has some great planning behind it. I am finding that there is a real place for some easy runs once in a while. Have fun and safe wheeling. Looks like DO has you well taken care of. Wish I could come there is some great scenery up there.

There will be 20 Jeeps going tomorrow. I have some optional sections all picked out where you can get a wheel in the air, flex your tires up into your fenders, etc. There will also be opportunities to run your Jeep in either the sand, deep mud or both! So, lots of fun opportunities on this "easy" run.

Today, 23 Jeeps showed up for a great run with picture-perfect weather. There were XJs, a ZJ, TJs, and some new JKs (both swb and 4 door). There were two groups due to the amount of Jeeps on this run.

Group 1 ran Pinkham Canyon Trail and Old Dale/Gold Crown Rd.
Group 2 ran Berdoo Canyon Trail/Geology Tour Road and Old Dale/Gold Crown Rd.

Group 2 saw some pretty fun obstacles that kept everyone entertained all morning. Photos will be posted tomorrow morning.
