Trail Report

This was my first trail run of the 2013 year, and it felt like lots of people had the itch to get out and have fun on the trail. We had 23 Jeeps show up with a lifted and built mid-size bow tie and a Ranger Rover show up to add in some variety. These rigs both did well with their generous amount of displacement and drivers who weren't afraid to let the hammer down when the trail called for some motivation.

Today's Plan:
With the large number of rigs that showed up, Russ Chung and I saw that it would be prudent to split the groups up in an effort to cut the size down due to the fact that we were traveling through a National Park. This worked wonderfully, with Russ' group traveling the remote Pinkham Canyon trail while our group cruised up Dillon Road to Berdoo Canyon. Our first stop was at a broken strip of asphalt which actually gave a stock 4 door JK Unlimited a real challenge. He got hung up in a spot that a stock TJ-based Rubicon drove straight through. The saying goes, "If you ain't stuck, you ain't off-roading!" This axiom signaled the hallmark of a well-planned trail run up an, "Easy 1+" off-road trail - yet, we were still traveling on asphalt!

Wheeling on asphalt - Lockers optional:
With the tow strap put away, and the 4 door JK Unlimited on level ground, our next stop was a nice hillclimb at a site next to Berdoo Camp. Mud-Terrain tires as well as All-Terrain tires provided the right amount of traction to climb the steep hill that nearly hung my Jeep up about 1 year ago. With better conditions, the trail was easier to climb. 10 minutes further up Berdoo Canyon was another (former) mining claim with a loose, mogul-lined hillclimb that would stop any unlocked short-wheelbase 4WD vehicle. Our group played on this section for about 10 minutes before driving into Pleasant Valley and then to our lunch stop at Squaw Tank.

Park Avenue and Old Dale Road (Where Jeep OEMs go to test product):
After lunch, our group made the 45 minute trek down Park Ave. to our turnoff 6 miles north of Cottonwood Visitors Center where we turned down Old Dale Road, looking for our friends who made the Pinkham Canyon run. They mistakenly told us they were 20 minutes *ahead* of us, while they were in fact, 20 minutes behind us! After climbing 1/2 way up the rough mountain along the trail, we stopped for a 10-100. Far off in the distance, you could see dust clouds made by 5 or 6 Jeeps - it was them! Soon, we were atop the rocky mountain - complete with deep holes and lots of rocks - where the Chrysler/Jeep OEMs test their SUVs that wear the TRAIL RATED badges - I know, because I met them on one of my runs several years ago where they tested new Grand Cherokees before heading on to Death Valley, CA.

Gold Crown Road and beyond:
Our group continued down Old Dale Road to "The Bowl" where nice crevices line a depression about 6 or 7 feet deep where water collects. The water was all gone, and all that existed was dusty silt. Our Jeeps and SUVs ambled up the steep dropoffs and we watched each other to see if a move was made that the other couldn't do. We picked up and moved along down Gold Crown Road, arriving at Hwy 62 at half past 4. We had plenty of time to air our tires up and reconnect our swaybars before heading off from where we came. Some of us went to Santana's Mexican Food in Twentynine Palms for some great food and a chance to talk 4 wheeling in Joshua Tree. This was a great run and everyone was very happy and satisfied with the day's 'wheeling. Let's do it again!

"Airing down our tires"

The Chevy driver reported airing down his tires to 20 psi for this mostly mild trail

The Chevy driver waited while this stock JK Unlimited got hung up on the pavement.LOL

The rockier section of Old Dale Road required 4LO for the Chevy driver

"this was supposed to be a mud hole... but it dried up(thats SoCal for ya). The Range Rover was having fun in it"

"seemed like this guy was trying to get stuck..."

"End of the line... everyone aired back up"

"then we headed to Santana's Mexican Food in 29 Palms for dinner..."

Good times!
I didn't take nearly as many pictures as I wanted to. Even forgot to swap batteries on the GoPro after Pinkham, so I didn't capture the awesome ride up Old Dale.
I spent all of Sunday getting the Jeep back in shape, one of my batteries died on the trail run (actually, it was dead that morning, but I self jumped with the Aux from my dual setup and didn't think much of it). By the time we got to the "mud hole" it was pretty bad, and the Jeep was acting up because of it. My Brake and ABS and Down-hill Descent Control lights kept flashing, and it was beeping at me. My monitoring system was showing 14.9 up to 15.1 volts coming from the alternator, so it was fouling things up. So, while everyone was airing back up, I ended up removing that battery from my system completely and re-routing cables to bypass my smart isolator and use the aux battery exclusively. That pretty much fixed the problem and everything was back to normal, but I still headed out straight to Autozone just in case. By the time I got to Autozone, I was sure nothing else was wrong, since my charge voltage was back to normal, and no more funny stuff going on with the dash lights.
It's always good to be prepared!

That said, here are some photos!

I joined the Pinkham group, it had been quite some time since I'd been on that trail, since I always enjoy a stroll down Berdoo, so I went for something different.

Pinkham split many times, and depending on which side you took, you could end up in a rocky busy path, or a nicer path... always a gamble!

After a nice run, we turned into the start of Old Dale Road

Since we were ahead of the other group, we decided to explore the Black Eagle Road, but somehow they made it to us a lot faster than we anticipated, so we had to haul ass out of there!

We finally caught up to the group right before the climb up Old Dale Road, it was an awesome sight to see!

If no Jeeps got stuck, we wouldn't have been off-road. We all had a great time on that portion of asphalt.

Thank you. I appreciate your help. Mayra and her Mom are now en route to New Jersey, but they had fun doing something they have never done before. They thought that the Jeeps were a lot of fun, and Oscar enjoyed himself as well. The weather was perfect, and with our tops down, it was picture perfect.
