Jeeperformance Rubicon Excursion

After years of wanting to run this trail, three different jeeps, and never enough time, I was finally fortunate enough to plan it, run it, and have an unforgettable time! What started out with around 12 jeeps, ended up with 5. All the stories, the opinions of difficulty level, and countless pictures and videos, are past and I now have my own. Jim, Debbie, Buck, Jaime, John, Judy, Taylor, Joe, Criss, Pam and myself, three JK unlimiteds, one JK 2 door, and one LJ drove from So Cal up through the old towns on hwy 49, staying one night in Mariposa, to Placerville, then after a night there, hit the trail on Tuesday morning. Spent the first night at Buck Island, after getting rained on for an hour or so. Then the next night set up camp at a perfect spot at Rubicon springs, Thursday morning tackled Cadillac hill, and came out at Lake Tahoe to call Harrahs our home for the night. Friday morning, continued down the 395 to Bodie ghost town, then took a trail out of there back to the 395 and ended up in Mammoth, where we spent the night and had a great Mexican dinner, a few hours in the spa with some traveling Germans and others from France. Very interesting conversations!
All in all, a perfect trip!
A few things I learned: the Rubicon is relentless, one obstacle after another. The trail gets right to business after you air down, no time to "warm up". The section along buck island is difficult but very fun and challenging. Rubicon springs is privately owned, and you can have a fire there regardless of fire restrictions. The bears aren't the only thing you need to worry about taking your food, the squirrels are worse and much more sneaky! And lastly, Cadillac Hill has no relation to smooth and luxurious like a cadillac, it's steep, off camber, and makes your heart work overtime until you reach the top. Enjoy the pics! I'll post more as I have them emailed to me from our other friends that were there.

Last chance for gas and supplies, the Icehouse. We topped off our tanks there, and the peace of mind was well worth it! After dumping our 2 gallon Rotopax cans in our tanks, we finished the trail with about 1/3 to 1/2 tank, and averaged about 9mpg with the jeeps while on the trail. Being in 4 low for three days uses some petrol!

Our camp and view from camp, Buck Island. As soon as we got our jeeps and gear covered, tents up, and beds set up, the rain stopped. We're just glad the rain started after we got to camp, the section at Buck island would be much more difficult if the rocks were wet!

That's a little odd, luckily you guys are good people. He may have come back to a stripped rig if the wrong people came through

I love how colorful your group of Jeeps are I'm sure being loaded with all that gear made the off camber stuff a little more intense. It sounds as if everyone came through without any damage or mechanical issues?

Looks like it was an amazing trip with lots of good memories made

Johns LJ has a Poison Spyder rear bumper/tire carrier that had much more strapped on than a spare. He also had his RSE Easy rack with a Bestop rack bolted to that, Rotopax gas and water, a countless amounts of camping supplies for his wife, daughter, and himself. It worked flawless!

Lisa, even though we all packed our lighter gear up high, the off camber sections had me thinking about flops. And more so when you find things like parts and windshields through these sections!

One more piece of useful info before you do the Rubi, make sure you have a good set of rock rails, you will use them!

And speaking of Rubicon springs, here's a few pics of the spot we set up at. Absolutely beautiful, and Yes we did do some cooling off I the water. The full moon was all a part of the date we ran this, and it was awesome!

This should have been on Modern Marvels, how to keep your trasheroos away from Mr Bear! 200' of nylon strap, a few ratchet tie downs, and a couple of cocktails will do the trick!

This was at the top of Caddy hill. Due to the Yosemite fire, the air was smoke filled and took away our view. A good time nevertheless.

What type of cocktails do the bears prefer, and just where did you leave said cocktails?
