Joshua Tree: Berdoo Canyon Road to Gold Crown Road - Jan 18th

I'm leading a group up Berdoo Canyon on Jan. 18th. Last year, there was a good turnout. Lots of great stuff to see and opportunities to lock in your diffs.

Joshua Tree National Park - Berdoo Canyon Trail (into the Park) Gold Crown Rd (out of the Park)

Date/Time of the Run:
Saturday, January 18th - 9 AM to 5 PM
Driver's Meeting @ 9 AM - Please have gas tank filled and ready to go.

Location:
Love's Travel Stop - Carl's Jr.
45761 Dillon Rd, Coachella, CA 92236

Park Map:
http://www.thegreenacresranch.com/im...e_park_map.jpg

Berdoo Canyon Trail/Geology Tour Road:

Berdoo Canyon Trail will be the starting point of our day on the trail - The canyon, and later the camp, gained their names from a nickname for San Bernardino. Our group will pass an abandoned camp that was established to construct the Colorado River Aqueduct in the early 1930s, through the little San Bernardino Mountains, before ascending a dry wash on our way to Pleasant Valley with clear morning views of the nearby Salton Sea. Our group will have lunch along the Geology Tour Road - an area believed to first be populated during the Paleo-Indian period close to 9000 B.C. Our lunch spot will be near Squaw Tank - a Native American campsite with boulders bearing deep pockets where hunting impliments and seeds were both ground into the rocks (where we can only walk/hike, not drive our SUVs. Our group will arrive at Park Blvd at around 1 p.m. where we will travel east, stopping at Jumbo Rocks for an unhurried chance to stretch our legs, and examine the odd rock formations that amaze travelers.

Into Gold Mining Country:

From Jumbo Rocks, our knobby and all-terrain treads will roll towards Old Dale Road where amazing vistas from the Pinto Mountains provide views of the nearby Hexie and Black Eagle Mountains. We will travel past the 449 ft deep Mission Well, continuing past the successful Virginia Dale Mine, continue along the trail above the almost hidden Golden Egg Mine which was worked until the 1970s and resumed and ended again in the 1990s. Continuing up the rough SUV trail past Golden Egg, we will finally connect onto Gold Crown Road - airing our tires up at Hwy 62. From here, we will be approximately 15 minutes east of the town of Twentynine Palms, CA where auto parts stores, restaurants and lodging are all available to travelers.

Difficulty Rating: 1+ includes some sand, whoops, soft dirt, rocky canyons,
narrow sections of trail containing washout/ditches, steep dropoffs and
hillclimbs). Swaybar disconnects will help in traction - but are not required, as will all-terrain-type
tires with strong sidewalls (along w/a good spare).

Run Type: Day Run

Please have all the REQUIRED EQUIPMENT, including a FUNCTIONING CB RADIO. See:
Required Equipment for ALL Runs

Directions to meeting place:
Coming from Los Angeles/Riverside/Orange Counties:
Take I-10 East to Exit 146 for Dillon Road
Turn left traveling North on Dillon Road
Turn left again to Love's Travel Stop.
Carl's Jr. is located at the right side of the complex.

**Exact departure time from meeting place: 9:15 a.m. (please be prompt).
Lunch will be at 12:00 p.m. (high-noon!) alongside the Geology Tour Road at Squaw Tank.

I would like to do this but it is so far for a day run. I have not been to Joshua Tree in many years and it would be nice to go with someone who knows the area. Are there still some nice campgrounds out there and is anyone camping for this event?

There are several campgrounds there. I've stayed at jumbo rocks, pretty cool place. http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm

This sounds like a lot of fun. Put me down as a maybe. Need to see if I can get time off from work.

Baja was real tough on the Wife, but a weekend on the trail sounds like fun! I know a couple of good spots to camp. This should be a fee free weekend - just waiting for the announcement from the US Gov't on this...

There are plenty of campgrounds in the park and two BLM areas one up the 62 and one down the ten. I like the one down the ten but it's far. The one up the 62 last I stayed there. There was a lot of crackheads.

Camp sites appear to be booked solid. I know of places on BLM land that won't cost money, but is tucked out of the way. Either that, or the Motel 6 in Twentynine Palms.

I feel your pain on that one. Up at 0400 everyday myself. No weekends or holidays for me though. Gov employee.

Thanks for getting back anyways. .there's only a few of us that live at the beach; most of the people I usually run with live at least an hour- three up the road from me. This run is pretty far and I'm rolling solo..so just didn't want to do it all alone.

Have a great holiday..maybe some other time!

Sounds like a great place. I would feel very comfortable leaving my camping gear and other things sitting while I was out wheeling in the desert. Can't seem to get away from these types out in the desert and everywhere else.

Lorie,

Let's keep in touch as the date approaches. At a minimum, we can caravan out there.

This area is filled with weirdos. This would be trail packing if I camp outside the park. Even the BLM up the ten. Just a couple hops east is a prison that dumps out new voting citizens of California. But this is me. You are free to make your contributions.

That's one of the reasons I was hittin you up. Caravan sounds way better than going totally alone. I get lost in a brown paper bag. ;-)

I do a lot of rock crawling.. Was kind of feeling a more of a mellow run and somewhere I hadn't been. Camping is required for me though.. Too far.

Meeting new peeps would have been the cherry on top!

This is what I was thinking as well. I have been to Borrego so many times over the last 30 years as well as Ocotillo and all the Big Bear areas. I thought this sounded like fun and a whole new place to explore. May have to find a way to make it happen.

I don't know where you guys are at, but I'm game. It's not my normal weekend to be off Monday , but that Monday following the weekend is a holiday for me. I'm down!

Road conditions along Berdoo Canyon Rd.

Years of neglect and erosion have caused some sections of Berdoo Canyon Road to require additional help and spotters.

Mining claims can be reached - this section requires traction-aided differentials to compensate for the deep holes dug by tires trying to reach the top.

Stock SUVs sometimes cannot make it up Berdoo Canyon Road - as shown here.

Some rocky sections like this one require slower speeds and good judgement of where your differentials are.

Here is where our lunch break will be spent - below the rock piles, not on them.LOL

Be prepared for standing water and mud to cover your sheet metal, tires and wheels. This was along Old Dale Road.

Gold Crown Road contained this section where standing water combined with mud provided a fun obstacle to end our day.

Day 2 Trail Run - Brooklyn Mine Jeep Trail

For those interested in a 2nd day on the trail - The Brooklyn Mine Jeep Trail is a load of fun - located just off of Old Dale Road.

Photos take in Feb. 2004 with the Rubicon Owners of CA Club

This climb up stopped a group of 'Rovers. But, our Jeep TJs made it right to the top of the hill!

The backside of the mountain contains a long rocky trail that is lots of fun.

Anybody thought of what camping area? I spent Friday night at the one near the school. Had some partying going on but it was cool. Tad bit sandy.

I know of a few good places. It depends on how much people want to drive after the run is over.

Quiet/Secure campsite - Golden Egg Mine

Desolate campsite - Brooklyn Mine/OK Mine Trail Intersection

After camping at both spots, I think near the OK and Brooklyn Mine intersection was probably the best spot.
