The run could start off in Lower Lake at DJ's pizza for an early lunch.

As you can see, plenty of parking....

The pizza was pretty darn good! Here's a copy of the menu....

Next is a 20 minute drive up Morgan Valley rd. to the North entrance of Knoxville OHV area...

This is the mile marker post to the entrance. It's kinda hard to see the entrance from the road....

We drove the 1.2 miles up to the northern trailhead where there was a staging area and restrooms.....

From there we explored the main road south to look for some trails to take. The main road is in pretty good shape with minor rocks and washouts, all two-wheel drive stuff. Bout the same as the Cow Mt. main road but not nearly as dusty...

There was a lot of offshoot trails from the main road, so we explored a few of them. Lots of rocks and elevation changes. The vegetation was actually cleared on many of the trails so pinstripping was kept to a minimum....

After about 3 hrs. of exploring we ended up at the south staging/campground area (Hunting Creek Camp) where there was another restroom....

Drove another 1.5miles out the main road to a Y in the road and found this sign...

We didn't have time to explore that direction, so we called it a day and headed out to the the paved road(Morgan Valley Rd).
I haven't looked at Gene's video yet, but I'll assume it's vidio of one of the offshoot trails we took.
All in all, it was a fun afternoon. Thanks again goes to Gene for helping scout out the area. I need to decide on how to organize this one. It won't be as organized as the Cow run, and I may have to up the difficulty level on this one in order to make it worth while. More details to come.

As you saw in Gene's video, we split up on one of the trails to cover more ground. The brush seemed more choked up on Gene's route than was on mine, but my route had some bigger rocks to negociate. All very doable though as long as you pick good lines. I made though all the trails we explored without any hits and I'm only on 31's with a 2.5" lift. We saw other trails that were even more difficult, so I think there is something for most difficulty levels.

Ok, I'm gonna catagorize this run as moderate in difficulty. I think the group will be fairly small, so we can run one group. This run won't be quite as cut-n-dry as the Cow run, so we may hit some trails not previously explored. The good news is that most of these offshoot trails we saw appear fairly clear of brush, so pinstriping should be minimal.

Good choice of music! Gives folks a good idea what the main road is like too. For those who may want to join the run but don't want to do the offshoot trails, you could just follow the main road to the south camp and meet up with the group. The main road is 100% pinstripe free and has some great views! As you can see in Genes video, the main road has a few washout areas that require some negociation!

Gene and I did more scouting of Knoxville today. We started at the south end and ventured south to Cedar Creek Camp. After 4.5 miles of main road like road gates stopped our progress and Cedar Creek Camp looked like a scene from a Zombie Apocalypse movie! I wouldn't camp there even on a good day! So we turned back and headed north on the main road to find some more offshoot trails. Pics to follow shortly.

I think we may have scared everyone away with threats of pinstriping and zombie apocholypse campsites! LOL!

Well, by now you guys have deduced that Knoxville has a main fire road that is rocky, rough, not as dusty, but for the most part 2WD stuff. From the two scouting trips made, we have scouted several "offshoot trails" that provide some more aggressive offroading. These offshoot trails seem to eventually loop around and meet up to the main road. Some of these offshoot trails are pinstripe free and very rocky with modest elevation changes, and some trails are less pinstripe free with some narrow, rocky, washouts and steep ledges. 4WD LO stuff, but still modest in difficulty. IMO, these offshoots provide some great learning experience for those who want kick it up a notch, but not beat up their stuff too much. There are many more offshoot trails that have not been scouted, but from what we have experienced so far, it looks like they all lead back to the main road at some point.
At this point, we need to decide whether to start at the north entrance and work our way south, or start at the south entrance and work north. I'm gravitating towards starting at the north side since most of our scouting is there, and the south end seemed kinda bust. There is a midway point on the journey where we can take a break and enjoy the views. I have labeled it " the grassy knoll". This is a point that is about half way thru between the north entrance and the south entrance. Pics will be forthcoming.
For those who don't want to meet for lunch at DJ's Pizza at 11AM, you could skip the lunch and meet us at DJ's parking lot at 11:45AM. Departure from DJ's at 12:00.

Smaller group should actually be more fun, IMHO. Definitely up for more difficulty, wished I had went with Gene at Cow Mt. Pencil me in!

Two weeks to go guys! Just a reminder, we'll meet at 11AM Saturday at DJ's Pizza for an early lunch. Roll out of there 11:45-12noon. Address to the pizza joint is 16135 Main St. Lower Lake. Those that need their beauty sleep and want to skip lunch can meet us at DJ's parking lot at 11:45AM. It's about 15-20mins on Morgan Valley road to the North entrance of Knoxvile OHV. Is everyone on the list still going?

Yeah, I know, not much of the trails, but if you have been following, you know what the trails are like.

Hey Guys! Looks like my father's day present is a free day to go with you guys! Count me in, if the invite is open! I will caravan up with mwashburn. The terrain looks pretty fun... Not sure if I will have my upgrades on by the 16th, so is completely stock doable? Even stock tires? I am waiting on tires and rims until my lift is in... I have the 2012 JKU with 17" rims (255/7/17 or 32"ish)... I might have a 1000miles on them by the 16th hahaha.

Is that a gopro video? I am looking for a place on my Jeep to place my gopro. might have to steal your setup hehe.

Looking forward to meeting up and getting out. Thanks guys!

Welcome aboard! I'll add you to the list. The offshoot trails are rocky, but doable in stock trim. It's a great place to hone your skills and get comfortable with your rig's capabilities. Some of the trails are narrow with brush, but most are clear. The main trail is totally clear. My TJ only has a 2" lift on 31" tires, so your JKU should be fine.

Welcome!! As said you will be just fine. Not to scare you off there will be some pinstriping on some of the trails, but it's all part of the jeeping world.

Gene is correct in that some of the trails can get a little narrow with manzanita bushes getting close. the good news about this particular area is the offshoot trails all lead back to the main trailhead, so if someone doesn't want to take an offshoot trail, they can stay on the main trailhead and meet up with the group as they negociate the offshoot trails. This is probably why our little list is small in comparison to the last run we did.

Of course you may! Are you joining us for the Knoxville run? As far as a coastal run, I was thinking about planning a Labor Day weekend coastal run starting in Willits taking Sherwood Rd. to Fort Bragg, followed by Usal Rd to Shelter Cove. This will be an overnighter for sure. Ideas welcome.
