No Worries

Ok I will try and ease any worries that anyone might have about Last Chance Canyon. This was the first place a local club member took me when I got my jeep a couple of years ago. I was driving a stock 04 Rubicon and I had no problems at all. So Beantown your rig will run it with no issues, just listen to the whom ever is doing the guiding.

I am going to try and make it as I live in Ridgecrest and as Cons_Table said its only about 20 mins from here.

sounds good. i live down in the south bay so its probaly 2 hours away from me. i know this is past up willow springs off the 14. if its not gonna be so hot this time of year do you guys run with your tops off? i have a hard top and im thinking of taking it off for the run. or would it be better to leave it on, is there lots of dirt and dust to choke on

Its actually startin to cool off here. I always run topless in the summer though, no matter the temp lol. The trip wont move all that fast thru the canyon, so I would assume the dust would stay to a minimum. The only faster driving you may see is at the trail head for a couple miles, so you might catch some dust there. But the majority of the time in the canyon will be much slower.

I don't really know much about the YJ's and their leaf springs in terms of offroad capability, but Last Chance Canyon is any more difficult than some of the stuff we did at Cleghorn last weekend.

Once we get past all the obstacles on Last Chance Canyon, the rest of the run will be mostly dirt roads where I would imagine a fair amount of dirt will get kicked up. I'd love to run this topless and doorless, but I'd rather not have to clean all the dirt out afterwards. And also I don't want all my gear to get stolen out of my Jeep while we're eating at Denny's.

I'm not familiar with that bumper, but it's not stock. Winch is hidden, so no way to tell from the video what kind it is. Looks like a 3" or 4" lift.

I've got a couple of friends coming with me who have never been off-road. I am going to leave the top and doors on so it is a little more comfortable for them. It is a long drive from Orange County.

I'd like to add a stop at Bickel Camp (N35 26.172 W117 53.20122) to our itinerary if no one objects. I think it would be a nice historical scenic stop for those who've never seen it, and is only a quarter of a mile out of our way along the way to Schmidt Tunnel. I figured if you've never seen it and you come this far and get this close you might as well make a stop at this little piece of history.

I'm guessing maybe 4-5 hours on the trail including stops.

"Burro Schmidt" sounds like one of those non-cursing curse words. Like "Shut the Front Door."

Have fun! Post Pictures!

I've got a couple of off-road noobs with me tomorrow. He drives BMW's, she's got a Mustang convertible. Going to introduce them to the dark side. Should be fun. See you at breakfast.

It's gonna be 83 degrees out there tomorrow. I'm still kickin' around the idea of running this topless and doorless. And what I mean by that is mesh top and tube doors. I just need to figure out how to keep my tools and gear secure while we're eating at Denny's. Could be my last chance (no pun intended) this season to wheel stripped down.

Unfortunately I can no longer make this run.
We had a couple issues with my Ms Koala's car so I have to help her step dad fix it tomorrow as he is going out of town on Sunday for a week.

Have a fun time tomorrow and stay safe.

Post plenty of pics.

I think you would be fine eating at denny's with the top down. We just need to park together and sit where we can watch our rides as we eat.

Okay then, I'll give it a go. Thanks. I couldn't remember if the parking there was in view of the dining area.

Right on! Mid to high 50's on the freeway in the morning, but hey that's what my windproof jacket, beanie and gloves are for! I always carry them in the Jeep along with my rain coat.
