Last Chance Canyon / Burro Schmidt Tunnel - Saturday 10/9

A few of us have been talking about running Last Chance Canyon to Burro Schmidt Tunnel on Saturday 10/9. More details to follow. No time to work out the logistics at this time, but I just wanted to give y'all a heads-up so you can think about it. Post up if you'd like to join us.

What kind of Jeep do you have? Last Chance Canyon is a moderate trail and I've seen stock JK X's go through without a problem, but yah there are bypasses to everything.

To be honest with you, being your first time out you might FEEL like you're in over your head at times, but your JK Rubicon is more than capable for this trail. I've seen plenty of stock JK X's take on every obstacle on Last Chance Canyon. This was the very first trail I took my '09 Rubicon daily driver on when it was three weeks old and bone stock. You might scrape a little underneath and that will freak you out the first time off roading because you're not used to hearing your car (which your Jeep is not) scraping over rocks, but that's just your skid plates scraping and that's what they're designed for. And like I said, there are bypasses to every obstacle on Last Chance Canyon, so you can bypass anything you're not comfortable with. I'll also be sure to have a little talk before hitting the trail to go over newbie pointers and any questions anyone has. We'll also spot you on the more difficult obstacles. By the end of this run you'll be amazed at what your Rubi can do!

I would head out to this, but I have plans for that saturday. If you guys headed out after the 15th you could hit nightmare gulch too.

Sorry you can't make it. Yah, Nightmare Gulch is a fun one to. Unfortunately for me, after 10/9 my weekend availability will be very scarce through Thanksgiving.

Okay, here's the plan folks.

Saturday 10/9/2010

Pack a lunch, and plenty of water (I recommend at least a gallon per person). Although not required for this run, I highly recommend having a CB radio to be able to communicate with the group on the trail.

Gas up in Mojave, then either meet at Denny's or at the trailhead. Please let us know which of the two meeting places you'll meet at.

8:00am Breakfast at Denny's Mojave (optional)
16262 Sierra Hwy, Mojave, CA 93501
661-824-1748

From Mojave, go 20 miles north on the 14 to Redrock Randsburg Rd. Veer right onto Redrock Randsburg Rd and go exactly 6 miles to the Last Chance Canyon trailhead on the left. The trailhead is easily overlooked and passed up, so I suggest you zero your trip meter at the Redrock Randsburg turnoff and go 6 miles.

10:00am Meet at Last Chance Canyon trailhead
N35 21.735 W117 53.904
Here we'll air down and disconnect and have a little pre-run meeting and go over pointers for the newbies and answer any questions.

Cudahy Camp
N35 24.649 W117 55.588
We'll break here for lunch.

Burro Schmidt Cabin
N35 24.644 W117 52.455
We'll stop here to check out the old cabin.

Burro Schmidt Tunnel
N35 24.624 W117 52.554
And of course the infamous tunnel. You'll have the opportunity to walk through the tunnel and check it out. Bring a flashlight (which you should have in your Jeep anyway ).

Mesquite Canyon Intersection
N35 26.184 W117 50.557
We'll bear right here to head back down the easy Mesquite Canyon trail, which will drop us off at
N35 23.331 W117 49.017
where we'll air back up and reconnect.

So....post up if you want to join us.

So far this is who we've got:

Going:
yomondo
JRickW

I am sure the jeep can handle it, but ive never driven off road and just like anything else im sure there is a right way and a wrong way. i probably will want to stay away from scraping rocks. i definatly would appreciate all the help and pointers from you more experienced people.

i do want to get out and see what it can do though, ill mark it on my calendar

I learned my off-road driving by doing it. Unfortunately it was almost always alone so I had to figure it out by myself. You learn a lot that way but it can be dangerous/expensive. It is MUCH better to go out with a group. Then you can get the guidance and perhaps more importantly, you can see how the others take the trail. Hope to see you there.

Bummer. Well I will make sure to meet up with you guys the next time around since its only a 15-20 minute drive for me since I live just down the road in ridgecrest.

Overall Last Chance Canyon isnt too bad...it gets a little more technical if you guys were to head through Nightmare Gulch also, but still not difficult. Throughout the canyon there are multiple routes that can be taken, so if you are feeling good there are more advanced lines, and if you are feeling timid there are easier lines. I think I scraped up on the rocks once, but it was with my hitch (departure angle wasnt high enough) Here is a picture where I scraped. If I remember correctly, this is the bypass around the "V-notch"

I wish it was that close for me instead of the 2 hours.

Yah I plan to take that bypass around the V-notch. And I believe there's even a bypass for this bypass.

I believe the other choice is just a flat road lol

This is the v notch. It looks like the guy is running it from the opposite direction that you guys will see it from, but like I said, there is a way around this. The v notch isnt mandatory to go through on this trail. Dont want to get you freaked out on your first trip lol.

Search youtube for "last chance canyon v-notch". There are a bunch of videos. I've never actually run it myself, and based on the videos it looks like something that my Jeep is not quite ready for.

Yah, that's what I was referring to. I think there's a flat dirt road above the bypass around the v-notch. From what I remember there's a fire road-type dirt road option around all the obstacles.
