P.S. That's raw unedited, unfiltered video shot by my young assistant with no prior training. He does know a fair number of expletives, however

Thanks for coming out everyone, it was a good day. Weather was good, no breakage. Well there was that flat tire at the end but for the most part, a good time with good people.

Good run with 23 rigs. We should have taken a shot of the rigs while on the ridge line to Nightmare.

The day was 20JAN13 and it began like any other day, coffee pot going off at 0400, that is 4 AM to the uninitiated, the smell of freshly brewed coffee permeating the spaces of the domicile we call, HOME. Turn on the brain-dead box to find out if the world as we know has ended and it did not. Nothing is really being reported on this day in history. There was something about some college football player and his fake internet girlfriend. Really shows ya where the general public’s attention is focused doesn’t it? Sad. And there was something else about the Hollywood made and poorly researched movie about fracking, which everyone failed to report was sponsored by an oil producing country. None of that matters right now as what mattered was the weather report and that was sunny skies, chilly in the AM warming to around the mid 60’s in the high desert and best of all, NO WIND.

Once the morning coffee and routines were completed the Jeep was loaded, backed out of the garage and pointed to Red Rock Canyon State Park, http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=631 (for those not from the area). This area is rich in mining history, gold, silver and copper were mined in this area as well as pumice for cleansers, http://www.highdesertdrifter.com/holyAsh.shtml. (again for those not familiar with the area) So one must not think of this as a barren waste land that it appears to be. As with the local and national news none of this mattered on this day either, just the weather and the fact that Jeeps, Samurais’ and Toyota pickups were about to descend on a well known canyon called Last Chance Canyon. Some history of the canyon, http://digital-desert.com/last-chance-canyon/ (blurb just to the right of the picture) This canyon was to be only part of the trip as the reason for the meet was to due Nightmare Gulch closing at the end of this month, for the next six months, for Raptor Nesting. Evidently these noisy birds need “quiet” for nesting and breeding so we humans and our loud machines and other animals are told to STAY OUT. Fine don’t want to hear the noise anyways.

The meet was set for 1000 hrs or 10 AM. In total 23 rigs showed for this event with quite a few being first timers on this route. People came from all over to include Burbank, Thousand Oaks, Apple Valley, Santa Clarita, Ridgecrest, and Antelope Valley. Some journeyed over 2.5 hrs for this event. There were kids, dogs, and who knows what else that will not be documented in this report in attendance. Right off the bat we should have known this was going to be a good run due to the arrival of long time wheeling partners and friends ChuckRN and his bride. They arrived with their standard poodle Rex and ChuckRN opens with, “I don’t know how something could be so happy walking around with a shaved azz”. He was referencing the poodle here. This had me laughing on and off throughout the rest of the day. Thing about the poodle for me was the “fur” on its head, it reminded me of Bert Convy Google Image Result for http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTcyNDI1MjQwMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODA0NjIyOA@@._ V1._SX214_CR0,0,214,314_.jpg (no disrespect to the dead) but I could not get this image out of my head. JeeperDave49 had to suffer through some trail anxiety as his “trail bride” was stepping out on him for this run. Now so this is clear to the unknowing Jeeperdave49 normally wheels with his buddy Stan (not Ancient Path) and during a previous run to Calico, Stan was dubbed Jeeperdave49’s trail bride. Stan had to show all of us that he was married as well as that he was able and willing to wheel his own rig off pavement and off road, cause there is a difference. My opinion is that this was all staged and that the other parties involved were paid actors, this would be the woman that was being touted as Stan’s “bride”. I have no proof to back this thought up but then again, there is no proof that will disclaim it either. We are all left to draw our own conclusions. This mystery will be right there with the chicken or the egg, thus will never truly be answered.

Pressing on with the run… First obstacle for us was the v-notch. Video and commentary for this obstacle can be viewed throughout this thread. Brian did an awesome job getting first timers through this obstacle. I however am banned from taking our rig through this obstacle till it is paid off. These are orders that have come from on high, my wife. We all answer to a higher calling of some kind and I live with mine. As the married know, “happy wife, happy life”. So our jeep remains a v-notch virgin for now but, the day will come. During the runs through the v-notch castman2 had to be hand strapped to complete the run without body damage. This has been photo documented in a previous post. I have never witnessed such a thing before and found it fascinating. I am wondering if castman2’s passenger will be back, this was her first off road experience in a jeep. As can be seen in one of the photos, her face was about 10 inches away from granite. Heck of a way to get introduced to off roading but then again, it’s done.
After the v-notch it was on to what I believe is Cudahy Camp http://deathvalleyjim.com/2012/04/10/old-dutch-cleanser-mine-cudahy-camp-32812/ for lunch. Here footballs were broken out, socialization was conducted and some ventured off to explore the surrounding area. One young lady found a geo-cache that was hidden near an old explosives locker. After the break it was time to head to Nightmare Gulch.

For those that haven’t been, this is one beautiful canyon to wheel through. The first time through your heart is beating so hard and you are watching all your corners due to the tightness of the canyons you miss its beauty. On this part of the run we came across one individual that was having some rig problems. We gave some advice, they seemed to have it in hand and 30 or so of us standing around watching him wasn’t going to get it fixed any faster so we pressed on with our run. We got to the first extra credit and several people attempted and made the extra credit. Believe there is video of this that will hopefully be posted soon. At the next extra credit site the horror happened. Our stock rig driver got himself high-centered on a waterfall. The horror was that this rig, albeit stock, is a RUBICON. Baddest of the bad, yet had to be assisted off the waterfall by a SPORT model. Oh the horrors…. A minor tug was all that was needed, re-alignment of the tires, and the stock rubi descended the waterfall with no problems. The second extra came and passed in no time as it was breached with no issues by all that attempted it.

Throughout the rest of the run there were no issues or concerns experienced. The most troubling thing on this part of the trip was avoiding the hikers. Every time we caught up to them the male would watch as we would roll over the boulders and use our rock rails as pivot points. Come to find out this individual was a JKU owner and stated to one person in the group, “I would have brought my Jeep down here but we are alone and thought better of it.” Wise man. Though not a hard trail by any means, we all know that bad things can and will happen when you wheel alone. Hopefully someone gave him our site address so he can join us on future runs. His wife got some good shots of us going through the canyon.

I must digress a bit, at the end of the run where we all began to air up, we lost an Ancient Path due to a flat tire. ChuckRN was back with Ancient Path assisting with the removal of the tire when a bolt was noticed to be loose on Ancient Path’s rig, front lower control arm. This would be a good time to remind everyone that has read this far to go and check their nuts. A loose nut is a bad thing, very bad.

So concludes the DaK trip report. Wordy I know but now all that did not and could not make the run can feel as though they were there. Thanks to all that came out, it was great meeting and wheeling with each and every one of you.
