lower trail 13 - carnage and fun

So we just did superstition mountains and went for knock on wood to get to the new section "lower 13“ which is a new section on it that is NASTY...absolute blast.
Trail leader headed it up 1 guy opted out at the mid line of the trail to wait for us to come up the canyon to him (smart guy, he only suffered scratches).
Mid way through lower 13 we had 4 rigs bail it was over their head and they had suffered some pretty bad body damage.
We continued up.

The run is 35s minimum with lockers front and rear you will use em, my 37s were almost out gunned....

Cj5= crushed drivers side roll bar, crushed whole fro t fender and rear fender smashed in
Rock buggy= armor slid on everything
Chris buggy= genright armor is all hashed
Duff tj= missing mirror, smashed in fender front passenger, ripped soft top on top edge leaned into canyon wall
Bill 4runner buggy= managed body damage on top of all the damage through armor and corner guards
Bronco (old school trailer queen)= missing rear fender and door damage
Cj= door smashed and fender crushed
Me= gashed rear upper quarter panel in ripped off brake light and license plate (re attached and did it again)

I'll start posting pics tomorrow, I'm in a tent and tired right now....
One of the best trails I've run, scored rock tattoos...

The guys that opted out mid way one was a grand Cherokee highly modified and he ripped his rear right fender trim dented drivers side door, gouged major creases all down drivers side and passenger side
The other guys suffered similar fate.....

Highly recommend it, do corner guards and take your hard top off I'd have broken my glass and top out had it been on...remove doors if possible and you will use your lockers and all the travel you have....

I will add that this trail in short wheelbase is nasty let alone a jku like mine...

Passenger. Why, don't you want custom superstition body work?

I want to do that run too in someone else's Jeep.

My 5yr old in the first pic had a blast, was startled the first hit on the side....in a concerned tone he said "dad, that sounds a little bigger than a scuff" lol

After that he laughed and had a good time...

Chris had a go pro going on front of his rig he was right in front of me his kid had another in his hands hanging out the back videoing me lol...his wife was snapping pics so I know we should have some good footage.
We have one that shows some under carriage on a turn up and around the canyon walls...duff was behind me and I knew I was way up there from the teetering of the front off the ground then coming back down...had no idea till I looked in the rear view and all I saw was his under carriage when he went through the section...

Looks like fun. But how do you now cringe when you smack a rock?? I'd take one look and run like hell!

I don't cringe at all, I bought it and built it to just this kind of stuff....I need hydro assist and some corner armor now but its not a bad thing to get a rock tattoo once in a while...

This would be a great pre-mod run. Right before you buy corner armor, tube fenders, aluminum half doors and a custom paint job.

I put the hartop on last night the track is straight and useable, I'll post pics of it this morning at work.
I'm bringing a BFH and a flat metal piece to put inside and beat against to drive it out slowly and evenly...its in a good 2"+ under the top...the rail is chewed up but that rock ended there on that hit. The one after would have taken the top out completely. I'll post a pic of the rips on the top/side of duffs soft top....the canyons were nasty and grabbing everything coming by. The trail alone is nastier then hell without the added walls...

The again I might be too lazy and keep my tramp stamp.....

That Lower 13 is a fun looking trail. I did Wishbone instead of Knock On Wood this year, plus 3-4 follow-on trails but would have definitely enjoyed Lower 13 from the looks of those photos. I heard about that trail for the first time this year.

We had a yahoo in a nearly new Nissan Xterra that insisted on doing Wishbone with us and he ended up having to be dragged out by the recovery team. He first knocked his front axle out of commission with either a busted pinion shaft or busted ring & pinion gear. Then as we were trying to winch him to a point where the recovery crew could get to him, he snapped the shock strut inside his front driver's side suspension which also let the coil spring fall out. He had f/r lockers but beyond the lockers, his Xterra was clearly not prepared for that level of trail. We tried to talk him out of it by telling him to expect breakage but he wouldn't listen.

The only notable thing that happened to my rig, other than a few new scraches here & there, was a big sharp rock pushed my aux transmission cooler up enough that it pushed into the t-case & cracked a fitting. It was only a minor drip as of Sunday morning in camp but it let go about 10 miles down the highway on the way home & it was soon billowing great clouds of white smoke as the ATF hit the muffler. I had to stop & bypass the aux tranny cooler entirely & add more ATF to get home. Luckily the CHP officer that stopped to check on me was cool & just laughed when I started laughing about the pointy rock that did the tranny cooler in.

Glad to hear that it wasn't worse...lol
Yeah we asked bill which one to do between the 4 nasty runs he mentioned knock on wood had a section that was optional but would bring the pain to the rigs....so we signed up immediately.

What a good group of guys there, my son is the one who drew the first raffle ticket...

Jerry was that the white xterra? We saw one in line on the left side of the knock on wood line it was lifted and looked ok but we questioned the build....not knocking it but because you have lockers doesn't mean you have a trail worthy rig, you just break further in.

I'm making side rear panels this week and having the aluminum panels bent up got the nutsert tool and some nutserts for it. I'm covering my rear section eventually I'll tig some tube and flares on it, for now it will use stock till I get a bit of time...

I'll try and find the thread on the stoddard wells run.....I might make it I'm trying to squeeze in hammer trails and mottino wash on the short list....
