Moab EJS 2014

Just got back from Moab Easter Jeep Safari 2014. We had a small group that went for the week. From Riverside it’s a 10-14 hour drive depending how fast you drive and how many stops you make. One thing great about Moab is they have a ton of trails all within a short distance of town. Most the trails we did had some bad ass obstacles which had bypasses. It’s much different wheeling then what we find in SoCal. It was fun learning how to drive it and discover what the jeep can actually do (and not do). My wife took a ton a pics as we did lots of wheeling and the area is very scenic. Below is a list of trails I ran with some of the obstacles I did/attempted. I will be posting pics in the near future. I hope this helps anyone on the fence about going to Moab and wants to get a feel of what it is like. Let me know if you have any questions. For the record we had a blast and will return to Moab next year.

TRAILS:
Fins & Things – a couple hard lines
Hell’s Revenge – Hells Gate, Maggie’s Hot Tub (with a strap as trans stopped working), Escalator (Slow flop, drove out as someone grabbed my corner)
Moab Rim – Devil’s Crack, Z-Turn, Sand Hill
Cliff Hanger – Hard line out of the gatekeeper
Poison Spider Mesa – Lot’s of harder lines
Golden Spike – tons of hard lines, Golden Crack, Double Whammy (did not make it)
Medal Masher – a few hard lines, Rock Chucker (pulled a line just to be sure I would not go backwards), Widow Maker (rolled my front wheels up and said “nope”)

If you were at EJS 2014 please feel free to list the trails you did and post up your pics...

Lessons learned: I have been to Moab several times, but only on a MTBike. I knew the area, but not the jeep trails. No one in our group knew the trails so we signed up for three runs with the Red Rock 4 Wheeler club. The runs were $50 each. They had lots of help on the trail and even got BLM to close the tight trails while they were using them. All good. The only down side is doing a run with 30-50 jeeps. Way to SLOW for my liking. In fact, the last trail we paid for, we skipped and opted to do our own run. Next year I hope to plan my own runs with a more manageable group size

Yeah the wheeling on Rocks (not over rocks but on solid rock) is different than I am used to but I had a good time and the scenery is as good as it gets. Like Dan said we signed up for runs put on by Red Rock 4 wheelers and they did a real good job running them (similar to IE4W at FF) The first trail we did had 50 jeeps (almost as many as Cleghorn gets ) and the second had 40..... Its tough with that many.

I have to say I saw more jeeps than EVER at this event....all different shapes and colors...and all the major vendors were there as well. Its like the Sturgis ND Harley trip, but for Jeeps.

My wife took a whopping 1400 pics, but a lot of that was scenery and a day trip we took to see the Arches via the Jeeps (very cool)

When I get some time I will post some up as well!

Sturgis is in SD. Not trying to be an ass, just representing my home state. You are right, though, EJS and Sturgis Bike Week have a very similar feel to me.

I attempted escalator without lockers and got stuck on the 2nd bowl
Had to be winched out wich was even more nerve racking than driving it
Where'd you flop
Here's where I got stuck

Same place. I was told to stay far right. The hole was full of water and it did not look that deep. Wrong! If I was 6" over to the left I would have drove right thru it.
Every 4 door JK I saw attempt it had to get winched out.

From riverside as well. Had my pregnant girlfriend and my 2 yr old son, so we made stops for diaper changes and cravings. Took us 3 hrs to vegas, stayed the night. Then 7 to 8 hrs to drive the remainder the next day. Stayed at "moabundercanvas" which is adjacent to the 4x4 road out of the arches. took the longer drive home to grand canyon and flagstaff. That took us about 16-17 hrs. Was worth it for the views (as it was our first time at Grand canyon also)

Yes, far right on the drivers perspective. I was up higher on the trail then on that pic. My wife has video of it. I'm gone this w/e. But I will post it up when I get back. It was a real slow flop. If I had any skill, I would have turned into it with a little gas and avoided the flop. Hopefully next time I will not be such a pinhead...

Since we left for home on Friday morning, we all left out tickets with Tim.....either he didn't win or he's holding out on us... I will check his jeep for any new editions next time I see him just to be sure. How'd you do?

I didn't get to go to Moab this year, or for the last couple of years, but I have gone every year from 2007-2010. I have done quite a few trails..most of them difficult. And I have to say I absolutely LOVE Moab! Once you go you'll be hooked an continue to keep going. I've always gone with our own groups...never signed up with the Red Rock groups. I would like to go back though, and do the easy, scenic trails. I've done the hard stuff...time for the scenic stuff. :-)
