Moab Trip?

I have always heard Moab is the Jeep Mecca. What is the best time of year to go for decent weather? How long should I plan to spend in Moab - not counting getting there and home? What are some equipment needs and other precautions?

Most of all - Does anyone from here want to put together a caravan and have a "meet and greet" style trip?

I've heard Oct and March...I'd love to be in on a March run

Personally, anything below 70/50 is too cold for me...so I'd go only if it was at least that warm, if not warmer.

I've been to Moab about 6 times...and yes..it IS the jeep mecca. ;-) I've gone during Easter Jeep Safari..which is the week of Easter. It changes from between the end of March, first of April. I've also gone in July..but it was F'ing hot!! I've also heard that the fall is nice..September, October.

I would go for at least a week. Moab has so many trails to check out, both hard and easy. All of them scenic. There's also Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park (if they are open from govt crap).

As far as equipment, just take what you normally take when going on trails. I've been with people who brought extra parts...driveshafts, control arms, sway bar links...

There is a 4x4 shop there that could help you out if you need anything. Open 24/7 during EJS. I would also bring extra fluids...oil, ATF, coolant...ALCOHOL... ;-)

There are condos you can rent, or places to camp. I've done both. The condos I've gone in with a few friends so it wasn't too bad. Camped at the KOA a couple of times. That's a decent place as well.

I have this trail book, as alot of my friends do as well:

ATV Trails Guide Moab, UT: Charles A. Wells: 9780966497670: Amazon.com: Books

Very helpful in figuring out where you want to go. ;-)

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Every Jeeper should make it a point to get out to Moab at least once, IMO. Definitely you'd want to spend at least a week there. There are so many good trails and so much to see. The Charles Wells book is a great resource. I highly recommend getting it.

Spring is a popular time to go. EJS is a very busy time, but is also kinda fun. If you go a few weeks after EJS, you can avoid the EJS crowds and benefit from the painted trail markings that are still visible from EJS. Aside from tent camping, RV'ing and condo'ing, there are also lots of motels.

Wrangler Forum members did a Moab trip a couple of years ago. Members drove from all over to meet up. I was hoping to see that turn into an annual thing.

Here's one of my favorite pictures from Moab. My wife wanted to strangle me for taking it. Top Of The World to you!

Looks like an awesome place to go and I haven't seen a picture yet that didn't look great...cant wait to check it out for the first time....a month or so ago we booked an RV spot for EJS 2014

I'm sure April can still be plenty cold, but it shows an average temp of 70 day and 40 at night...

Alot depends on funds. That's an expensive trip. But, I do know someone with a trailer. :-D Camping is so much cheaper than a condo. Hmmmmm....

I'll have to look into that.

we're interested in going, once a date is set we will know for sure. I'm sure its cheaper after EJS to stay anywhere. Personally i rather go half on a rv or condo with someone.

Joni & I leave Wednesday after work. Be our first time, so we are doing the Jamboree thing. So next time I'll know more where we are going and what to do. Joni likes the social stuff too.

Hmmm.... Week after EJS sounds possible to me. Last time I was there was for the first Annual NAXJA run for the east vs. west competition. That was fun.
Minimum 3 solid days. There is just tooo much to see and do.

I would say that 70 / 40 is great weather, but then I don't tent camp so I have nothing to say. This past weekend I watched several fellow Jeepers tent camp in temps that were in the mid 30s. They are tougher than I am...

Jeep Jamboree? Like they do at a Rubicon or do you just mean EJS event? I know the jeep jamboree has events across the country.

I end up doing that every year in Calico. I'm Not a fan, but the disease wins out every time. If I don't Have to do that to get my fix, I don't.

Moab is not necessary in March for me. Looks like I'll have to get a group together for warmer weather. I'm not rolling there in March.

I am hitting the Con next summer. That'll probably be my Big expense/trip for the year.

Not to mention, every time I wheel BB, Calico or even CB, it's an expense. Big gas money for me b/c I live at the beach. Everything is very far.

This is on our list to do also, I'm going to keep an eye on this thread and pencil in the dates once you guys decide. I would love to get my dad to do this, he has talked about Moab for as long as I can remember.

Definitely interested. I'd also prefer sometime when it's going to be warm enough. Maybe April or May.

I just got back from a 4 daytrip to Moab (Sept 27- Oct 1). Weather was very nice with highs 78-82. Not sure of the lows, but it was cold in the mornings with frost on the cars.

Thanks for the reminder on the BBFF....I think a week and a half in UTAH will trump BB though....that is a quick weekend for us.

Glad to hear you are a "maybe"
