Ok... so figured with all the people on this forum we could get a Facebook page started and start planning a MOAB trip. Just wanting to know if the interest was there... maybe do something in 2015 to give everyone time to plan it like a vacation.
Interested. Maybe plan to go when there's an even like EJS like Steve mentioned. I assume most on here don't know the trails out there well enough to lead, so we'd want a good trail guide.
If you guys go you'll have a ton of fun for sure. Myself I'm more into rocks( like we have here in JV or SW) then I am sandstone. So for Moab trails I like the one's on the south west side of town. Hell'z Revenge is fun and Poison Spyder is cool but I like the rocks on Kane Creek, Moab Rim or Behind the Rock's. ..there's others but they start to get more difficult.
Well I'm down to get something started and lets plan it out. I think I will stay away from the ROCKS after I had a little taste this weekend. I chewed my one of my rims... a shock mount and now I have some weird squeek when I push on my brakes at low speed. Not to mention I got a nice rock scratch on the back bumper. But I had a blast.. so thank you to WOKNROX... I had a good time.
So.. .next stop MOAB in April... lets get some plans together.
The brake squeak will probably go away within a few days. I used to have that issue when I was learning to wheel -- probably from riding the brake too much. If going down hill with auto trans: use the auto stick to shift into first. That will help keep you at crawl on the down hills and save the brakes.
I'll agree with the above posts about going during EJS. It is really fun to see sooooo many different 4x4s and all the vendors. Downside is some of the trails get so full that it takes you three times longer to get through it. But if it's your first trip, EJS is a fun time to go.
I think Moab should be on every Jeeper's bucket list. EJS is a fun time to be out there as well. The Charles Wells/Funtreks Moab book is a very good resource to help you find your way around if you don't have a trail leader who's familiar with the trails. I've got a few GPS tracks shared on Everytrail as well. Parts of some trails can be hard to follow without the trail markers that the Red Rock 4 Wheelers paint on the rocks for EJS, so if you don't go during EJS, within a few weeks after EJS is a good time because the trail markers may still be visible. Aside from the Jeepin', there's also tons of great scenery in Moab and in the surrounding National Parks.
At this time, as much as I would love to, I don't think I'll be able to make a trip out there in 2015. I've got some other trips in the works and I don't know if I'll have much time off left.
You can go stock if you want. I've seen people in stock rental Jeeps on difficult-rated trails in Moab. You can pick an choose which level trails you want to go on, from super easy to rather extreme.
If you are a relatively skilled and careful driver, a bone stock Rubicon will do MANY of Moab's trails, including all of those you mentioned in your original post. That said, additional skids and a mild lift can be advantageous...but are certainly not required. There's a misconception that only modified vehicles can enjoy Moab. For a lot of people, it's easier to modify the Jeep than to learn how to drive it.
I'm up for MOAB during EJS in April. I've got 50+ days of leave on the books so need to start burning some of it and I'm sure by then Bear will be big enough to whip up on mean old Addie!
Yeah.. that is 7 months of training for BEAR... so I would hope by then he could at least stand up for himself... we will see. Yeah MOAB in April will be the BOMB... I might get a trailer from UHaul and just tow my Jeep in... rather than drive it all that distance.
There are trails of all difficulty levels in Moab. You don't necessarily "need" to be lifted and running 37" tires, but it would definitely open up the amount of trails for ya. With that said, some of the trails have bypasses on hard obstacles.
I just received my badges from my May trip out to Moab. It is beautiful out there and loved the scenery. Trails are easy to insane. make sure you choose wisely. Some trails once you start you are dedicated.
I need to figure out where to put my address on the Jeep site. I've tagged the Big Bear trails numerous times under two different ID's and have never gotten a badge.
