Hey, if any of you who are going want to download the GPS track so that I'm not the only one who knows where we're going, here are the ones I made from last year.

This was our general planned route.

This was our actual route.

And this is a combination of both. This is the track that I have loaded to my GPS devices to help guide us through this trip.

Hey folks, this is a little over three weeks away. So far we've got 3 Jeeps and 5 peeps going on this trip, which does not require a Special Use Permit. If we have at least 7 vehicles or 15 people, we need the Special Use Permit, and in which case I'd like to apply for it at least two weeks in advance to make sure we get it in time. So if want to join us but haven't committed yet, I'd ask that you please do so soon so that I know whether or not we'll need the Special Use Permit in time for me to get it. Thanks.

The two primitive campsites we used last year are

35 10.52736,-115 27.81978
35 10.48062,-115 46.58766

I was planning on us using these again this year, but with a small group, we can pretty much camp anywhere along the trail. If I remember correctly, the fire rings at both sites are just a circle of rocks, with no grate.

The campsites we used last year are not on that map. That's a good map though. I think I'll put the waypoints for those campsites into my gps track in case we want to use any of them. Nice thing about campsites that are NOT on a published map though, is that there's a better chance no one else will be there. But always good to have more options.

I'd like to shoot for being off the trail (and "off the trail" is still at least 20 miles or so from Barstow depending on where you get off) by about noon or 1pm on Sunday to try and beat most of the traffic coming back from Vegas. Last year we had to skip the last stop (Camp Cady) in order to achieve this, and being Thanksgiving weekend we still had lots of traffic to contend with. Other than Camp Cady, there isn't really anything much else after the water crossings, which is why a lot of Mojave Road travelers will just bail at Afton Road after the last water crossing.

If Noobs are welcome... put me down as an interested (1 Jeep 2 Peeps).

I need to wrangle up a dog sitter before I confirm. I should have a solid yay or nay by Sunday.

its noob friendly, just be prepared for 2 nights primitive camping and 3 days in the middle of nowhere. the trail is easy, and you can bring your dog too.

I have two dogs and while they are awesome little passengers on long trips and have some other wonderful qualities, I have some concerns about them annoying the crap out of everyone during stops.

I really don't want to be uninvited to future events because my dogs are naughty!

Great! Hope you can work it out. I put you on the "Maybe" list for now. In addition to what Beantown said, also be prepared for some cold nights.

I will be running the MR a day behind you all (Sat. - Mon.), even though I would have preferred Fri- Sun. Work dictated the schedule. BTW, Avi is $59 a night on Friday night.

The run should be fun. It is the first time for all in our gruop. If you get a chance to post up conditions after your run, I may be able to pick them up on Sunday at some point through the ipad. I am using it as the primary nav tool for the first time this trip. I don't need reception for it the GPS or the nav program, work and will have plenty of backups, including paper maps and other GPS units, but I understnd that you can get cell reception in certain areas. No ham operators in our group.

Have a great trip, and don't worry, we'll pick up anyone who you leave behind.

Yah, Thursday nights anywhere are much cheaper than Friday nights. Last year my Thursday night room at the Avi was only $20.

There's reception off and on throughout the trail. The problem might be not having reception at a place where we're stopped and when I'm actually able to text.

Turns out this is not the best time for us so we will not be able to make this trip. It looks like a great deal of fun but I just couldn't work it out. Maybe next year.

Two weeks left. Getting closer.

Hey, it's been getting colder out there at night. Temperatures near freezing. Be prepared.

Beantown and Six Gun Matt, if you've got a GPS device to load with one of the GPS tracks on the first post, I'd feel much better if I wasn't the only one who knows the way through there.

I used a zero degree bag last year, and it was fine. But that's in combination with a good insulating ground pad, two layers of thermals plus a few other layers. Good thing is that we won't have to worry about our ice melting too fast.

Oh and we'll need to bring enough firewood between just the three of us. Since I don't have a passenger, I'll see if I can fit four bundles in my Jeep.

Last I heard from cashcow a few weeks ago is that the water crossing is only about a foot deep. Last year when I went, the second water crossing was nearly two and a half feet deep. I doubt that it will get that deep this time, but even at that depth it wouldn't be a problem for you.

With your stock JKU I wouldn't be concerned about the water crossings. What might be a problem with street tires though is the mud at Soda Lake. Cashcow reported a few weeks ago that Soda Lake was dry and passable with his friend's stock LJ, but after last weekend's and next weekend's rain, it might be a problem even for those of us with mud tires. We can bypass it if we have to.

I'm waiting to hear a trail report from someone at JKOwners who was there last weekend. I'll also call the NPS and BLM maybe tomorrow, then again next week, to get any information from them on the conditions at Soda Lake. We'll bypass it if we need to.
