Moving to Cali

Hey everyone. My name is Adam and I'm moving to San Diego for my new duty station.

I have a 94 YJ back in Virginia, (4cyl, 33" SOA ford 8.8 locked front/rear with 4.56 gearing), and a buddy who is able to haul my jeep here because he is headed to San Diego as well.

-Is it worth bringing the YJ to Cali?
-What are the things I should know before making my decision? Such as gas prices insurance possibly and laws to consider.
-How is the wheeling out there as in will I actually get to use my YJ?

Any opinions and/or concerns will be appreciated.

Bring the jeep. Your going to regret it if you don't. There is all kinds of wheeling within 3-4 hours of SD from mild to wild.

Dang fellas y'all got me some sort of excited. And I was mostly concerned with the emissions test. Well, I'll sleep on the thought and talk with my driver about it some more

Dude, if you are going to bring a nice Wrangler to San Diego, Please, Please, make sure that you have a decent car alarm. Even, if you have a soft top. If you do have a soft top, seat sensors are a good addition to the car alarm. Mexico is about 10 minutes away, and they love to steal Wranglers down there. It is the perfect vehicle for that rural kind of countryside and terrain, just south of the border.

There are some great dirt roads in Mexico too, just south of San Diego. In fact, most of the country down there is kind of rural. If you ever get a chance, try going to San Felipe, Ensenada, or Rosarito. Those are fun places to go in a Jeep. I took my Wrangler to San Felipe shortly after I got it. It was a blast.

How soon are you moving to CA? I am hosting a big Meet n Greet the first weekend of August. Great way to meet several fellow members, and get to do some awesome wheeling. The info is the top sticky in the CA threads.

Not a prob. These events involve many members from stock to extremely built rigs, food, drinks and lots of fun around the campfire in the evening.

You will love wheelin here. Although if your like me a your use to driving through trees, mud, and heavy gravel be prepared to make the change to desert canyons, loose sand, and big as rocks. Body protection is a must!

While emissions may not be needed in your home state, when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton in the Marine Corps the CA smog test was required on ALL vehicles to get a DOD sticker to drive on the base. My truck (with out of state plates) wouldn't pass until it was 'fixed'. This was many years ago so maybe things have changed.... but might be worth checking into.

Would suck to get your Jeep all the way out there and then have to park your Jeep off base.

I don't know about other services but the AF stopped doing stickers completely and just do 100% ID checks.

Contact the Provost Marshal's Office at Pendleton and ask about their rules.

Unless you have made some crazy exhaust mods, or disconnected vacuum hoses, chances are you'll pass smog test anyway.

Good luck and hope to wheel with you once you get out here and settled in.
