I have an 89 Wrangler i6 with the carter carb and it ran like hell until I rebuilt the carb, plugged the vacuum leaks, and fixed all the disconnected and inoperable emission components the PO had neglected or disconnected. Now, it runs great. don't be in such a hurry to can the carb, with a little patience and know-how, they can be dialed in pretty good and should serve you well.

On my 82 CJ7 the carb was finicky, leaked and at altitude down rite a little bitch. A few scary trips when stalling out going down hill I was ready for a Howell but moved on to a JK

"Smog Techs" - are you saying your Jeep doesn't have to go to a "Test Only" - I thought that was automatic of all Jeeps.

When I sold my 82 CJ when I smog it, the young guy was having trouble with the carb I ask for the old guy in shop and he tweaked and she passed.
The carter carb sucks

Welcome to the forum. Nothing like some Fuel Injection to make a jeep crawl up a rocky incline.
