Talking new Jeep girl...Hi there!

Hi all,

I'm a total newbie! Just got my stock TJ '04 X a few months ago. I'm hoping to make some new friends to go wheeling with. I'm also looking forward to learning lots, I'm open to any and all advice about mods, especially big evil knobby tires and probably a small lift kit.

Cheers!

Spoons

Welcome to the forum. Take a look at the posting for the So Cal Meet n Greet on this same section. By the way, nice looking Jeep, not take the top off and enjoy the summer.

My budget is as affordable as possible without buying dangerously unreliable parts! I don't need to rock crawl or drive under ten feet of mud. Would just like to enjoy the hills and trails and maybe the occasional lawn.

I think I'm missing out not living in cali..lol

Start out with a lift you feel right with and some new tires. You wanting to do all the work your self or you got someone around you who will?

Call me insane, but I want to do it myself. Ok, don't call me insane. Please. I've gotten every negative response in the book to this. Everything from "you can't handle it without years of experience" to "hire someone" to "don't bother until you know how to weld". It's going to cost me time and money and headaches, but I'd like to do it.

No No No No No No

Everyone should build their own vehicle! I was just trying to see if you were going to or not.

Depends on what you are working on.

"hire someone"
Only if the project is over your head or you don't have the time.

Unless you are thinking about serious mods and custom items for your heep I doubt you will need a welder.

It helps to have some extra help (providing beer helps) and some guidance on certain things but you have to start somewhere. New tires and a simple lift shouldn't be a issue at all. There are plenty of experienced people on this board that are more then willing to help with any questions you have.

Enjoy the path your Jeep leads you down. It will be a bumpy one but that is the fun part.

Thank you for the support, truly!!! I'm hoping too meet some nice Jeep people to hang with and learn from. I will have plenty of questions. Probably lots of stupid ones.

In fact, come to think of it, here's my first. My right front sway bar link is shot. My first project! Where's the best place to buy new front links, or should I wait and do my lift kit? I assume the link size will change when I lift?

Thanks again, any and all advice is always welcome and appreciated!

Your gonna want to buy aftermarket sway bar links that can be easily detached, plus they'll last longer. You can get them adjustable so they'll work stock and after a small lift. I would recommend JKS sway bar disconnects.

They are pretty easy to change except getting the top part of the link out of the sway bar is a pain. You will need a really big hammer, but that's kinda fun anyways.

Some Cerveza! Some Grease on your shirt and hands! You can't forget some good friends who will laugh at you when mud falls into your eye when you pull something off the heep. We call that a party!

Welcome to WF spoondoggie, sounds like you are already on the right path.

Spoondoggie, I think you will do fine with your Jeep. You are already ahead of the game of when I came into it by knowing what the heck you are talking about with the sway bar links. As for where to look for the parts, try Quadratec.com. You can build a complete Jeep from their catalog/site.

install a 2" coil spacer (aka budget boost). Its just 2" polyurathane pucks that sit ontop of the coils to add some height.

Ride quality isn't affected much, if at all, and you can get those bigger knobby tires you wanted.

Price of those budget boost kits are fare price and is pretty easy to install. Gets you familiar with the jeep suspension anyway.

welcome and enjoy the jeep

They are even less if you order them without those metal bumpstops.

I love how the "New Jeep Girl" threads get twice the attention as "New Guy Checkin' In" threads, lol.

Welcome to the nut house Spoondoggie! Sounds like you'll fit right in.

You would be surprised at how far you can go with modding your jeep and still keep it a daily driver. Mine used to be a daily driver but I played too hard.
