Nitto Trail Grappler or Mud Grapller

Having the BF Goodrich KM2's on a national back order, I was considering Nitto. I run S. Cali trails, John Bull, Dishpan, Cleghoen and Calico. What tires work good for you?

I personally prefer the MTRs. But my dads JK has the trail grapplers and they do alright.

America's Tire has them as of last week. I had one back ordered for four months. They lost my order but re-ordered and I had it next day. I actually just ordered the new Trail Grapplers with new wheels. The KM2 are too soft on the sidewalls at least on the sharp rocks. Ive replaced two so far from gashes. However I've got 15,000 miles on them and look like the tread would last till 45,000 or so.

Why not MTRs like Doug said? Check with Stan at JPI- he got me a really good price. I prefer them over my last KM2s- but we're not talking leaps and bounds here.
The Nittos are crazy heavy- though they look good and are pretty true to size. I initially bought Nitto's but after reading all the crap about 3.21s I swapped them for KM2s before install. They're about 60 lbs. a tire vs. 43- lbs. for KMs or MTRs. 'Course then I swapped my KM2s for bigger MTRs (and 4.56s). That's three sets of tires in under 12K miles. Jeeps make you utterly insane.
(You get rid of those axles Russ?)
STOP THE INSANITY. LOL.

Good to know! I have the KM2s right now 33s, but I am moving up to 35s or 37s and regearing to 4.56s or 4.88 depending if I go 35s or 37s... Quick question... when you regeared the front from the 3.21s to 4.56s did you have to get a new housing on the D30 to fit 4.56? Thanks!

Mine is not a DD so the wait is not too much of an issue for me. I am more less concerned about sidewall. I know the MTR's are kevlar but I heard there traction is less than desirable.

Decided to do some research, a 35x12.50x17 Nitto Trail Grappler weighs 79.4 pounds, a 35x12.50x17 GoodYear MTR weighs 67.1 pounds. In my personal opinion that does not sound like a whole lot but then you go multiplying it by 4 or 5, it adds up quite a bit. It definitely could be the difference in gear selection.

Yes then there's the price. This set is going on until I can install D44's front and rear and regear to 4:88 or better. I just have to live with 4:10. As I said it not my DD...

I'm not sure what size your looking at but I have a Dana 30 upfront with a 44 in the rear and just went to 4.88s and with my TJ I have plenty of power on the road and off road

I have the Nitto Mud Grapplers. I don't have an actual 35" tire because a 34.5" tire was over a hundred cheaper. However, the cheaper tire came at a cost. These are E rated which means I feel more road bumps but have stronger side walls to resist puncture. If I could buy over again I would spend more money and get a tire in load range C not E. Ride comfort is a huge factor to me as I drive almost 80 miles a day in the Jeep

Yes- you'll need a new carrier upfront. Its tiny. Love, love my 4.56s with 35s. IMO- Willing to bet you'd be perfectly fine with 37s too- but 4.88s would probably be better.

Going with 35x12.50x17...I don't think I will go any bigger but then again??? But for now 2013-2014 I will stick with 35's. I don't want everything to be like a speed bump. I want the adrenaline rush to continue...

Sorry Jen just saw this, I'm picking the axles up tomorrow and my jeep too hopefully. I've had a couple people say they want them so far but I haven't even taken pics yet lol.

I've run Cooper DISCOVERER STT 33" X 12.5" for over a year now and I have been able to keep up with all the MTR and similar tires. These also have triple ply side walls and believe me, I have put those sidewall through a lot of abuse with not one blowout. I did need to shop around a bit for the best price but I got 4 installed OTD for less than $900, no back orders to deal with either. God willing next year I will be upgrading to 35's and plan on the same tires, that is how happy I am with them. I first got them because price was a major factor, my next set will be by choice.

I really like how they look, ride and perform on wet and dry roads. I know these tires are not popular but I spent a lot of time doing research on these and other tires and I ended up with these.

Has anyone tried the Big O bigfoot? They have a 3 year 60000 mile replacement warranty. I stopped in to look at the Nitto and saw the bigfoot. Not a bad looking tread pattern...

I noticed you had said its not your daily driver...so is this going to become a dedicated wheeler?

haha I am right there with you! I am leaning towards the Cooper STTs and the MT/Rks... I am going with 37s for sure... but I am in the same decision making situation... Love my KM2, but for the price jump I am not sure if it is really worth it...

You might talk to DTM or Longnose I think one of those guys run the Coopers...
I'd go 488s...that's as low has you can go with the Dana 30.
I run 37s and have 589s....love it!

But I'm sure Stan will help you out...
