Ok so i pulled out a real map. From long lake the fire is only 5 miles away so way closer with a map with an actual scale. My brother says they may not have it contained till aug 15th, however he will keep me updated to any changes.

If it comes to it i'm sure we can figure something out.

edit:

Also tomorrow i will call the local ranger district to confirm the area is closed and see when it will be re opened and if it is open how bad the smoke in the area is expected to be the next week.

This sucks! I've been really looking forward to this run! Any ideas for an alternate run if this one goes bust?

These are the rest of the trails in that area. more near redbluff

cohasset area trails

We could always do signal peak or an easy trail system in forrest hill, or lake bowman both fire road like trails. there is a very large network of trails out here near placerville, but you would need a week to run them and hope you do not get lost.

Crap guys!!! Guess we could all put some shovels and water sprayers in our jeeps and build a fire line.

I would be great at that. I would just make a fire line anywhere they wanted it. I hope it's out before our trip.

The high lakes area is remaining open and not being closed to public. The only restriction is no campfires in the area. There will probably be smoke in the area due to the fire i would imagine though.

If everyone is up for it we can still do the trip, wind conditions permitting since they could drive the fire that direction.

Sorry guys but I'm bailing out. Inhaling shit ton of smoke is not fun to me... Been there don that. Did a fly by today and it's a mess... I will buy beer for the next run, but be careful with the fires if you go. Shit is unpredictable...

Yup i know what your saying smoke really sucks. I have no problem heading out sunday to take a look at signal peak if everyone would like to still do a trip next weekend, we will just have to see how it plays out.

edit: actually we cant do that as the sierra trek is that weekend . most other trails are further away and a longer trip for the bayarea folk than highlakes

I was up that way this afternoon too and the sky was awfully dark to the north of Oroville. Hopefully the wind will change and clear it out, but we should come up with an alternative just in case.

at this point they are expecting lightning storms on saturday and sunday so it dosent look good right now as they plan on staying at a safer perimeter from the fires so they dont get trapped if lightning starts another.

really not looking good at this point i am going to start looking at some other areas i could scout this sunday.

looks like its gonna be hard to find a back up

eldorado national forrest trail closures

really limits options in this area. if anyone wants to look up soda springs rd i know that very well, I used to do snow trups up there every year. nice easy run with some good views.

Some would not be able to make that, not really a all jeep friendly trail. we could do an overnight to spider or buck island lake and back if all else falls though. maybe some wheeling and a bbq at prairie city.

anyone else have any thoughts?

I live like 30 minutes from prairie city :P im down for any of those probably. Would prairie city be big enough for all the jeeps? Ive only been in the obstacle course part.

Yeah, the Rubicon wouldn't be for the faint of heart. I have to work Sunday so any overnight stuff is out for me anyways right now. Prairie city might work, never been there though.

so I think my best bet is 80-505-5. Are there people meeting up along that route somewhere that I can join up with?

We shall see.
If there is nothing left but charred remains and smoke I'll be heading to Cow and maybe work my way to Fort Bragg for some scouting.
