Places near Lancaster, CA

Hey my brother is moving to Lancaster, CA from San Diego. I am trying to plan a trip down there and while i am visiting we are planning on going wheeling but we dont know any places to go out there. I have an TJ with 35's and a 5'' lift and detroit locker in the rear. He has a 05 Toyota Tacoma with 6'' lift and 35's . If you have places in mind let me know. Thanks

I am not sure how far you are willing to drive, but there is a place about an hour away called ridgecrest (Thats where I live) and there is some wheeling out this way. A popular one that has popped up on WF a few times is last chance canyon.

Oh ya an hour is not bad to go wheeling. i will have to check out last chance canyon. Not Toyota will make it LOL. I was looking at big bear but it is about 2 hours away so i would definitley do some camping with that drive.

Its an easy drive too from lancaster. Depending on when you go...there is a canyon that is open for a few months a year that is really cool called nightmare gulch...it is right off of last chance canyon.

Yup, Last Chance Canyon is a popular one, and a fun one. Nightmare Gulch is also fun and very scenic, one of my favorite "local" trails, but is only open for offroading July through January and only during the second half of those months. Goler Gulch is also a fun one in that area.

Here are some of my GPS tracks if they'd be of any help.

Opal Canyon, Nightmare Gulch

Last Chance Canyon, Goler Gulch

Last Chance Canyon, Bickel Camp, Schmidt Camp, Schmidt Tunnel, Mesquite Canyon

I looked at the calendar and was just thinking the exact same thing. Definitely! Can't wait to go back. How about opening day, Saturday July 16th, Last Chance Canyon to Nightmare Gulch?

Also are there any permits or major laws I should know about before I drive down to California?

I don't believe so. In the area I wheel there aren't any permits or anything.

Does CA require mud flaps if your vehicle is lifted (like Washington) or offroading lights to be covered at all times? It's just what I have heard

Well by law, tires should be covered, there should be mud flaps if the body doesnt cover half the tire or something (not exactly sure on that law) and I believe you are allowed to have up to 4 lights facing forward uncovered (I think they have to be lower than the headlights if uncovered). I have never had an issue with tire coverage or mud flaps in my jeep though.

Ya thats not a bad idea. If it makes u feel any better, I'm running the MCE fenders up front...so there is not much coverage at all lol
