September Meet and Greet: Last Chance Canyon & Nightmare Gulch

Time to start planning a run down in the desert! Since it is not available year round, Nightmare Gulch is a great run to do, extremely scenic and pretty technical. Along with Nightmare Gulch we will also be doing Last Chance Canyon. Here are the plans so far:

Run Date:

SEPTEMBER 21-23

Camping
-Cons_Table (Bread and Pasta Salad)
-yomondo (Ribeye Steak)
-simidan
-4xwhat
-CY99TJ
-Lab Lover (Elk Stew)
-cashcow1608 (Dessert)
-EasyE2
-Sean and Brian (Chips and Dip)

Day Run
-Gama26b
-sjchoueiry
-Ancientpath
-castman2
-jeeperdave49
-jeff_in_rc (Potato Salad)
-Chris211

Possibles
-H2_recoveryteam (camping)
-JRickW

For anyone interested in camping, Ricardo Campground will probably be the best option. However, this campground is a first come first serve deal. Here is some info on the campground:

Ricardo Campground

HERE ARE THE CAMPGROUND COORDINATES: N35.365300 W117.984000
HERE ARE THE TRAILHEAD COORDINATES: N35 21.672', W117 53.943

Also, anyone camping...would you like to do a potluck on one of the days? Or would you rather fend for yourself?

Ok...Moving on...

Trail Details:

-The planned run will be from Last Chance Canyon to Nightmare Gulch.
-If there is enough interest, we can also visit Burro Schmidt Tunnel.
-I plan on leaving camp somewhere around 9am.
-We will stop for lunch after Last Chance Canyon, before entering Nightmare Gulch.

Driver/Rig Requirements:

-Front and rear recovery points
-Fire extinguisher
-First aid kit
-Spare tire
-All terrain tires
-CB Radio (highly recommended)
-Rock sliders/skids (highly recommended for rigs with lower ground clearance)
-Drinking is PROHIBITED on trail. Keep the booze at camp.

Got any questions? Post up or PM me. Let's make this a great trip.

Is "September 20 Day Run" supposed to say "September 29 Day Run"?

A stock sport can do these trails.

I would recommend at the very least stock skids and rails/sliders and being able to disconnect your swaybar doesn't hurt either.

This is about it. Just about any remotely difficult section of the trail has a bypass. This trail is good for stockers or modded rigs. Sliders would also be good insurance if u don't have the ground clearance.

Tomorrow I will contact a mod so I can make the edits to the first post and the poll. Keep an eye on the thread

If u plan on making this run as of now, would u mind voting in the poll to make keeping count easier?

Where is this area located? I'm in the Pismo Beach area, not very familiar with Southern Calif. areas.

I live in Ridgecrest, CA which is about 20-30 minutes from these trails and about 4-4.5 hrs east of Pismo. If u want to make the trek out, u are more than welcome.

I'm gonna say 9/22 day run for now, but it's possible I might be up for camping.

Hey anyone who hasn't done these trails before, I highly recommend you check them out. They're pretty awesome, while tame enough for the well-guided newbie or stocker to get through. Great scenery along Nightmare Gulch. I would recommend you have rock rails, as others have already mentioned.

There's a bypass for the V-Notch, but also some pretty cool photo ops while in it.

Voted for the 29th-day run.
Sept. 22nd is the Lake Elsinore Mud Run- gonna get myself muddy instead of the Jeep. However the trails are close enough for us that we can come up on Sunday if it turns into camping on the 21-23 weekend.

Sounds good. Stay posted! Depending on the turnout and votes, an official date will be determined in the future.

The camp in in Nevada? Do you have a link to a map of where the start is? I'm just trying to figure out if this would work as a day trip, etc.

No not Nevada It is in Red Rock Canyon...just down the road from Jawbone Canyon, right off highway 14.

That is for the campground...the trailhead is only about 10 minutes away.

We normally run Nightmare then last chance but either way is cool. Then when you get to last chance you can button hook and do Black Rock canyon which takes you back to where Nightmare and Last chance meets up.

There are other things to see out there as well,

Bickel Camp has a nice tour about what was going on and how.
Borax Mines, two sites for those.
If one goes out towards Mesquite Canyon there are plenty of mines and mine camps to explore some nice off camber stuff for n00bs to wade through.
Cabins to go through just past Bickel with the old post office.

Sounds Good DaK!

Ya the local club normally runs Nightmare to Last Chance...I learned it Last Chance to Nightmare and have always ran it that way, so I am just a little more familiar that way, even though it probably wouldnt be too hard to navigate the other way. Its up to the group on how you guys would rather run it
