That is a huge area, can you narrow it down a little?
Close to me is Kennedy Meadows off of hwy 395 above Pearsonville.

Sherman Pass is a pretty popular one.

Sherman pass is a good one. Many side trail as well. You can easily spend a day or two wheelin around the area. However. This time of year may not be a good idea. Snow causes them to close the main road rather quickly. Call the Black Rock Ranger station before heading up there.

Black Rock Ranger station is closed due to budget cuts.

Aren't they just closed for the winter as always? I know from working with the FS that the mountain is closed from the first snowfall until Memorial Day weekend, or sometimes later depending on the snow level.

Monache Meadows Jeep road is another good one all the way to the meadows.

Jeff,

Black Rock Ranger station is run by generators they do not have the funds to upgrade to new generators that have approved CARB catalytic converters so they are closed till they are replaced and you know how the budget is They were closed all last year… ya gotta love California

OK now I understand, hell I was up there early last year and they were still open. I know all about the CARB CRAP! We went the the same thing at work, what a mess and what a huge waste of money!

Even Sherman Pass could be closed. Have gone all the way up that hill only to find the gate down. They could put up a sign at the bottom, that would be nice. But, budget cuts.

Most likely you will have to wait till Memorial Day weekend to go up there and wander around.
