Year, make, model, miles, etc. Did it for 15 yrs. Give me some details. Just from the limited info u gave, I'd shoot towards a bad o2 sensor and catalytic converter. Feel free to pm, ill help u best I can. Did they flag u as a gross polluter?

I could use some help with smog as well. I have a throttle body injection conversion on a 90 YJ with the 4.2L, will that automatically fail me?

That just means your emissions are three times more than the max.

FYI if you qualify for the CAP program the BAR (bureau of automotive repair) will donate $500 towards the repair. Most star certified smog stations have the application.

If I'm not mistaken. The 89 should be fuel injected. It's running rich which means its probably not in closed loop. The usual suspect is a bad o2 sensor. Without running a few tests its impossible to give you a solid answer.

Word of warning.. Even if replacing the o2 sensor gets it back in closed loop and corrects the rich condition. There is no way to check the catalytic converter for proper operation until its back in closed loop. Realistically you should take it to a reputable star certified test and repair station and just pay them to fix it.. This will most likely take an experienced tech to diagnose properly.

If the repairs are NOT done a a certifies shop they do NOT apply to the CAP program. So if you take it to JimBobs auto repair and spend $$ trying to get it to pass. Absolutely none of that $$ will apply towards the CAP limit. Again. Take it to a licensed test and repair facility an ask about the CAP program upfront.

Good luck

Some of the tbi systems came with C.A.R.B. legal certification. If yours did not then you will probably never "legally" get through a ca smog check.

Your only hope is to visit the state referee and have them approve the mods..
