So Cal to Vegas by Dirt: May 19th - 22nd

Greetings All,

I'll preface this by saying I've never been convicted of murder.

I'm thinking of taking 4 days in May to travel from Barstow to Vegas in the dirt (Monday - Thursday) then stay the weekend in Vegas. I'll probably meet my wife and some of our friends/coworkers in Vegas Thursday evening. My Brother In-Law will be tagging along too.

Don't have a plan yet...haven't mapped anything out....but plan on making it May 19th - 22nd. If anyone is interested in coming along let me know.

A few folks here can provide character references.

Joe

I've been wanting to do something like this. I'll have to start planning now, so I can make the run. Mark me as a possible attendee.

Greetings All,

I have a tentative route planned out. It will run portions of Old Route 66 out of Barstow, north up into the Mojave Road for a time, then from Laughlin it's a straight shot up to Henderson with some side trips in between.

There won't be too much technical pieces. Lots of great ops for photos, lots of history, and good company and drinks around the campfire. If you are interested it might be nice to have a potluck one of the nights.

A few stops along the way:

- Amboy Crater
- Old Route 66 Ghost Towns
- Kelso Sand Dunes
- Eastern half of the Mojave Road (lots of great stuff)
- The Triangles (created by an ancient people…nothing is known about them)
- Mojave Mail Box
- Fort Piute

I'm putting together a GPS file as well. Still pulling together sites in Cali and Nevada. Looking forward to a great trip.

Joe

Most def. a stock wrangler will make it. I've seen a Subaru make most of it!

Have some bad news…it looks like my God Daughter will be passing in the next few days.

She's 6 and has been battling brain cancer for the last year. I'm going to make this a memorial ride for her and release some native wild flower seeds on the trip for her. So damn heartbroken right now.

Please don't donate…but i wanted to share her story here. HELP WITH SHAY'S MEDICAL BILLS by Shannon O'Malley - GoFundMe

I lost my niece a couple years ago after a similar battle. Now when one of my kids wines, cries, screams, fights, .... I think how lucky I am. Sorry for the bad news. I'm sure she'll love the flowers.

BTW, I stumbled across your blog when doing some googling about death valley a few weeks back. Doubt that I can make this one, but it sounds like a great run. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much RedBird2. Shay passed last night. Very sad but am relieved at the same time because she was suffering so much during the last few days.

Sorry for your loss. Sad to hear about someone going so young.

I am going to try to join you but am just starting a new job so will need to see if I can take time off as it gets closer.

My wife and I may be in. Love the idea and we love Vegas! Sounds like a killer trip. How many Jeeps are in at this point?

This sounds interesting... Not sure I would bring the 2dr jeep. May have to opt for the enemy, H2, longer wheelbase may be better suited if it's not much rock crawling. Unless it's a jeep only event?

Not a Jeep only event…an H2 will be fantastic. I'm going to start asking for a head count so I can pull permit for the Mojave Road portion and fire rings…yes we need a permit for fire rings.

So far we have about 5 rigs….Jeeps, Toyota's, etc.

Any and all are welcome. My rooms are booked in Vegas at the Hilton. Once we arrive in Vegas please stay the weekend and enjoy. We'll probably get some brew/drinks when we roll into town Thursday =)

Good morning. Do you by any chance have a map of the route you plan on taking?

I do the Mojave Road once or twice a year, so I would love to join on this trip if it works with my work schedule

And since you're planning on heading toward the Mojave Mail Box, you might as well hit the lava tubes.

I too would like to try to do this.
Just bought my TJ, soooo won't try to do it in the 2wd Cherokee! LOL!!
If I get my hitch, I may be able to bring an off road trailer to carry extra water and stuff.

Hey guys I very interested in this run and it sounds like the ideal time for me to take some time off from work. I'm a stock JKU and from the sounds of things seems like I shouldn't have a problem. Two questions though...Would extra gas be needed on this run? And would it be suitable for trailer hitch cargo basket?

The times that I've done the full Mojave Road, I've brought extra gas and needed it. But the way this trip seems to be set up, it will probably be more paved and hard packed. But hell, bring it if you can.

I used to carry all my firewood on a rack so it wouldn't tear up my camping gear. Might want to try that if you have it.

Hey sorry for hijacking your thread, but if your in town for the weekend and are interested in seeing a local trail, PM me and I will put together a day trip with a small group. There are a few good ones that are not to far out if town and well worth the trip.

Alright!

Foxsat71…I have you confirmed. How many people are coming along with you? I'm trying to get a head count for organizing a pot luck on Tuesday night.

I wish I could edit the original post.

This is too far in advance for me to be able to give a definitive answer. I'll see what I can do, and keep you posted as we get closer
