Soft Top Zipper Replacement - SoCal Area

Hi All,

I posted this in the JK forum and didn't get any useful responses.

I need to get the zipper replaced on my rear window. Does anyone know of a shop that can do this preferably in the Victorville or Palmdale/Lancaster area? How about SoCal ?

I've read in other postings that any dry cleaners with a seamstress can do the job. I found out very quickly that is not true of the dry cleaners I've contacted.

BTW, it is NOT under warranty.

Thanks.

First off what part needs the new zipper?
Secondly call Bob's shoe repair over in Buttermilk Acres at 760-377-3685 or 760-793-2698.

I had her replace a door window zipper and she had to remove the entire thing from the frame to sew it but hell it works! Cost me $50.00 for everything.

Hi Jeff,

I called her and then took the rear window over to her and after looking at it, she said she couldn't fix nor replace the zipper.

Here's the busted area (lower left corner of rear window):

Thanks for your help though.

Still looking for someplace to repair/replace zipper.

THANKS ! ! !

Sorry to hear that Hal, how about looking for an upholstery shop that does boats?

Did she say why she could not repair it? Just curious.

I guess this posting can be closed.

I went to a knowledgable automotive soft top repair facility in Lancaster today. This is the same place that the Lancaster Dodge/Jeep dealer sends vehicles for warranty work. The guy was very nice and patient and explained to me that he could not just replace the zipper on the window. The other half of the zipper on the top would have to be replaced. This is to ensure that all the zipper teeth line up. Plus, he would have to get the double-pull devices along with the zipper to ensure a match. Apparently, these double-pull devices are hard to get with some zippers. And then the custom length. He said it would cost close to $300 when all done.

The last time I looked at the Bestop webpage, they were selling all 3 windows for somewhere around $300. But after talking to the soft top guy, I'm afraid to order them from Bestop due to the possible teeth mismatch, custom length being 1/2" too long or too short, etc.

I remember a posting from gr8fulKID about using industrial strength hook/loop tape. That's always an option. (see http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/sof...on-141856.html) I'm fairly certain that the lady out at Buttermilk Acres should be able to sew the hook/loop tape onto the window.

THANKS everyone ! ! !

If you emailed their general email address, you may have just gotten a canned response. I would still PM Geoff@Bestop directly. He's much more helpful and knowledgeable than than your typical minimum wage tier 1 customer support representative. Although they don't do repairs, Geoff may have some useful advice for you. Or maybe not. But I it's worth sending him a PM.

yomondo:

Thanks for the suggestion. Although I'm not holding my breath, I just sent a PM to Geoff explaining the situation.

I live 120 miles or so from the edge of Los Angeles and there are not that many places to get work done out here in the desert. This is frustrating to say the least.

All these places that tell you it can not be done are full of it. I had my whole back window zipper replaced with the quality zipper needed at a boat upholstery shop in Montclair called Custom Canvas. Yes, they had to order the proper zipper and the complete job cost me $80.00. They can do a single zipper or the double pull zipper, what ever you want.

Gunner:

Your link goes to a yellow pages type page and the closest business that pops up is 400-500 miles away. Some are on the east coast and one in TX.

530ktm: THANKS. I will give them a call. Montclair is only (only?) 2.5 hours away. That's doable. I agree with you that it seems that no one wants the job. The excuse that the zipper is a custom length just didn't make sense since zippers are available in 100 ft spools, or more. I also believe that there is some "size" standard that all zipper manufacturers use, not just a SM, MED, LG.

Will let you all know.

THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE ! ! !

The being a special zipper is the fact that it needs to be able to go around the turns and hold together. It is a very heavy duty type as well.

Ask for Ron and tell him they did my zipper last year for the $80.00 in case they seem to forget. They do really nice upholstery for boats as well as I had mine done there years ago.

Also, the guy that told you that you can not just replace the one side of the zipper is correct. I had to take my whole top off and leave it there for a day or so because they had to remove and replace the zipper on the top as well as the zipper on the window. Just want to make that part clear.

Let us know if Custom Canvas can replace the zipper. If so, I may be taking mine there too!

I surrender.

$55 worth of gas and a 270 mile road trip. The lady at Custom Canvas says it can't be done. There are 2 types of zippers: Coil and Chain. The soft top is a coil zipper. She can only get chain zippers. She did say that she could put TWO zippers on. They would start/connect at the top center of the rear window and then zip down to the corners. This would also involve having a 1-2 inch gap at the top-center.

She sent me down the block to some repair shop called Collins something. He couldn't help out either.

However, the trip wasn't a complete bust. I got to see a bunch of dirty air and drive alongside a BUNCH of rude drivers.

I'm unsubscribing from this thread.

You all have a nice day.

Regards.

I do not get it. You actually drove to the place and she said she can not do it? Something wrong here indeed.
