I'm trying to be out there by 11 or so Friday morning if all goes well with my schedule! I was originally going to camp out in mule canyon but since my guest backed out that changed. Does anyone know if I can pay for a site when I arrive?

Hey, I passed on the V-notch on our trip there too. Or should I say I forbid my husband from taking my Jeep through it

I think the Jeep could have handled it just fine, it's the inexperience of the drivers that was the issue.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to if they have something open. Absolute worst case scenario, KOA is down the road or you can jump over to BLMs Owl Canyon Campground for $6 a night.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if there is anyplace to shoot near Calico (BLM land?). I'd like to blow up some clay pigeons this weekend...

That was my main purpose for wanting to camp in mule canyon. There's a good area about a mile in

I've seen shooting all over the place.

Last time we were there, there were people shooting right by the gatekeeper. I don't know if there are actual designated areas, or if people just shoot wherever they want.

You can shoot anywhere on BLM land. The trails out there weave in and out of BLM land, so it's helpful to have a BLM land map. For anyone who uses the Backcountry Navigator software for Android devices, you can download an overlay map of California BLM land. I use this. I have seen people shooting clay pigeons in the canyon just before the gatekeeper. Take note that firearms are prohibited in the campground, so while at camp just keep them well out of sight.

Run 2 ought to be scenic and fun. Not too rough just enough to say your off roading on a real jeep trail.

Trail 2 is a really good trail and is definitely kid friendly. I took my 7 yo daughter with me when we did the pre-run with Jeff and Bill, and we ended the day going down Doran. She did fine the entire time. My only advice would be just to warn kids about open shafts, since it was a heavily mined area. Especially around Bismarck. Also, you have A-holes that like to break glass out there, so you will just have to pay attention to that.

For those who signed up for Trail 2 and worried about it being too easy... it's not just sleepy fire roads. There will still be parts that may require a spot or two, especially on Phillips Loop, and you will still have to pay attention to what you are doing. There is still a small degree of probability for damage. If you are familiar with the black diamond (most difficult) type rating scheme, Phillips is rated blue (more difficult).

There are places along trail 2 that can provide bigger challenge if you choose. There are two bypasses for the black diamond section on Wallstreet. One is easy. One is moderately difficult with small waterfalls akin to Odessa. Both end up in the same place, so a group wanting to run the waterfalls can split off and meet the group wanting to run the easy run before heading up the ridgeline. We did both on the pre-run and Jeff knows the location.

Johnny, with H2_recoveryteam cancelling, that frees up a spot on trail #3. This run (minus Wall Street) is the same trail you did with your stock YJ a couple years ago, so you might be interested in seeing the difference now in your JK Rubi. But be aware that Wall Street has some tight squeezes that like to break off those rigid stock Rubi valve stems.

Awesome Joe, glad you can make it. I was actually a bit worried since I don't know the area as well as I wish. And yes, thee are some fun spots on the run that will be challenging. I just am a bit overwhelmed with the wedding plans plus the meet n greet as a whole to remember everything. Haha.
