Trails In Palm Springs Area?

My wife is attending a conference in Palm Springs in early February and I am going along as a kept husband. I am her escort in the evenings but the days are mine. We're flying in so I won't have my 2000 TJ or '42 GPW with me. Any suggestions on places to see and ride to, and any suggestions on where I could rent a Jeep that allows driving off road to these sites?

Thanks,

Doug

Hertz Rent a Car has an office in Palm Springs and carries Jeep Wranglers in the fleet. On the record, they do not allow any off road use with the cars, but if you plan on sticking to fire roads and just do local exploring you will have nothing to worry about. if you are concerned about damage, just get the damage waiver.

PM Imagolfspaz. He lives out there and should be able to point you in the right direction.

There are tons of canyons and washes all over the mountain sides. If you go over to Joshua Tree, there are some good canyons towards the edge of the national park. There are plenty of trails for pretty much how ever extreme you want to go.

If you will be using a rental jeep, there are a lot of nice fire roads and small dunes in a few places. Out by the base there is a place called the sugar bowl, its always good for some light hill climbs and soft sand.

Send me a PM and I can show you on a few places topographical map. I lived out there for 11 years and still visit family there often and we have been all over the mountains there, hiking and offroading. If you are in to hiking the Palm Springs area is awesome for that, and Joshua Tree national park is beautiful.
