Tranny Shop or Good Jeep Dealer in West LA?

I am not feeling good about the reviews of the local Jeep dealers service departments. My 2005 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is throwing torque converter code and solenoid. But folks say to be careful that tranny will throw codes when its fine and just a loose wire. That the tranny issues are computer related and someone needs to be good at the software and diagnosing it. But to check you want either a dealer or a high end tranny shop with the right DBR reader or other scanners that are more advanced and have software updates, can test CVIs etc, because otherwise you can pay for rebuilt tranny when you dont need it.

My tranny has 87k miles and drives totally fine. I even wheeled it after the codes were popping up. Made me nervous as heck but no issues even 4 low rock climbing steep grades, and steep highway grades.

So, I live near LAX in the South Bay of LA. Anyone know of a good tranny shop familiar with these Jeep tranny issues, or a dealer I can trust to run the scan and give me the real scoop, and if its really just a wire fix it without killing me price wise?

I have a local shop I trust, super good honest people, but they admitted they do not have the same scanner or equivalent that the Jeep dealer has....but they said if a dealer can give me the full eval IF it in fact needs rebuilt, they can do it with warranty and much cheaper than a dealer. They said hopefully an honest dealer would just fix the wire or software if thats the issue because it sounds funny it will throw codes and I can wheel it and drive on highway steep grades fine.

Thanks for any help, its stressful when you do not know who to trust!

Thanks Lorie :-) thats quite a hike but I will give a call.....I think Valencia is over an hour away from me. Hoping someone closer that gets the issues with this particular tranny can scan it, do a software upgrade, and let me know if its just a loose wire which seems to be common.

You'll find out, most people on this forum drive Hours to go to a place that's been recommended by other members who have been around a while.

And I'm not just being biased because he's my boyfriend. He's got a great rep. You can't be in business for as long as he has and be bad at what you do and how you treat people.

If it works out for ya that you find someone closer, that's cool too...just hope it works out for ya in the end ..and with zero issues

Thanks. Well the big thing is with this tranny from what all kinds of Jeep forums say, is its computer controlled and has software glitches and wiring issues...so even if someone is a tranny guru, they need the most high speed techy stuff the same a Jeep dealer has to diagnose, and be able to tell if its throwing false codes and its just a loose wire and which loose wire to fix, or if its a software update issues and simply needs updated software. Too many folks with my tranny and with the same codes I am getting, have rebuilt parts or entire trannies only to find out it was a wire or software issue. So the key is finding a dealer someone knows a tech that is trustworthy, or a tranny shop that has the same or comparable high speed scanner and software ability with the computer controlled Jeep tranny.

if it needs rebuilt I do trust a few people in town who are known by friends as good tranny guys for a rebuild, but they were kind enough to admit they do not have the fancy dealer type software stuff to diagnose it more than the codes I have gotten from scanners already.

If he is familiar with the common problems on this tranny and has all the high tech gadget gismos to scan and do software updates....it could be worth the drive

Only a dealer can do the software updates. Ron can relearn it only. But he has a $10000 scanner that can diagnosis the problem as long as it's not software updates related. You'll need to go to the dealer for that.

Not necessarily. Call a dealer, give them your vin, and they will tell you if you need any updates.

Don't buy into the whole thing that they need to run a diagnostic first, for a fee. All Jeep dealers are connected to to dealerconnect, and will be able to look up anything that has been done to your Jeep at any Jeep dealer.

Ask the dealer to see if there's any TSBs on it.

And if his work is half as clean as his shop he's got my business and recommendation...Vegas bound to win some money so I can pay Ron.. Hehehe see you Friday jeep

Well if I need tranny work it sounds like he is worth it coming from you guys. But unless something is strange and my tranny is throwing codes but drives totally normal under all circumstances, even heavy wheeling, seems like a computer glitch or some threads on other forums said there are loose wires prone on this tranny someplace....and if they run their diagnostics and the "CVIs" are normal then maybe its just a wire or software issue?

I stopped at a dealer today, said they would do diagnostic, any software updates for $119. Just gonna have to suck it up and get a ride there later in week or next week to leave it for a day. There is a dealer closer but I hear bad stories.
