Exclamation Tread Lightly at Rattlesnake Canyon

I didn't know if anyone had reposted this on here yet so I thought I would make sure it got put on here. We have to keep from shooting ourselves in the foot!

Rattlesnake Canyon / Lucerne Valley, CA - Rancher's Complaints

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This message was posted on Outdoor Adventure USA, and I posted it here to help get the word out to Southern California Off-Roaders...

"The sole remaining cattle rancher in Lucerne Valley operates a 29,000 acre ranch. ALL of Rattlesnake Canyon is within this ranch. The ranchers, Billy & Julie Mitchell, are generally pro-OHV, and have worked with BLM and Wilderness folks to keep the Canyon open. However, Mr. Mitchell has recently had to put down two cattle and one horse due to injuries created by OHV users going too fast through the canyon, and on the north end nearer his house.

The rancher has asked that those of us who enjoy and appreciate the Canyon put out the word to all the internet forums and groups of OHV folks to tell them Rattlesnake Canyon will be shut down if his livelihood is jeopardized (his cattle).

Please do your part to educate others to slow down. Keep the dust and noise to a absolute minimum, give livestock the right of way, and don't scare them off the trail.

Feel free to copy this message to any other online forums you participate in. We have the opportunity to keep this fun trail open, preserving a corridor between the mountains and desert, but we must act responsibly and educate others who may not be as sensitive to the issues at hand.

Tread Lightly!

As an FYI: At least one OHV group, "MyJeepRocks" is actively working with the rancher and helping to create a signage program within the canyon to advise others of the Rules of the Road. If you want to contribute, stay tuned to "www.rattlesnakecanyontrail.com" which is in the process of being set up."

Let me know when those signs are ready to be posted. If at all possible, I would be happy to lend a hand putting them up! PM me a few days ahead of schedule if at all possible. Thank you, XJ_Phil

Where is this trial at? We are out there a lot and I want to make sure we observe this ranchers request. When we run out there we just go all over so I would like to know the location

I can't imagine a wheeler injuring an animal and leaving. I'm wondering if it's quads or razors etc. They go a bit faster..and I'm not sure they share the same level of respect as we do when it comes to treading lightly.

Could be locals as well..Nonetheless, disappointing to hear.

The start of the trail that leads you by the Ranchers place and on I to Rattlesnake canyon (which leads you up to Matino wash) is 18 miles east of hwy 247 (and 247 cafe) on old women springs hwy. You'll make a right and head up into the hills and on into the wash.

This truly a shame...I've know the Mitchell family for a long time....hell I worked with Tom Mitchell for a good number of years till he retired a few months back...lol
Good people....I hope this doesn't go any further and we don't wind up loosing some more really good trails.

The only thing that makes this imaginable is that there are still a few fools out there who like to drink (a little too much) on the trail. Drinking and driving don't mix anywhere, but especially when you are testing the laws of physics.

I hope posting the signs will make people more aware of the fact that this is private property, and it would not take but the snap of his fingers to keep everybody from going into the trails from that side of the mountain. Poor old cows anyway!

Yea.. Unfortunately the only way to catch them is to do so on camera or in the act. I'd be pissed if that was my livestock. Not good for us.

I would bet that these people are on bikes and quads. I see some real dumb asses on quads and in those 4 wheel Razor type of machines going 4 times the safe speed and making more dust than anyone likes as well as jeopardizing the safety of others on the trails. For some reason they think they are the only people out there enjoying the country and having a good time. Frustrating to hear this is going on, especially on someones property who are nice enough to let us on to their land. And these bozos are always the first ones to bitch when land use gets taken away.

It isn't private property. If that was the case that place would have been closed longgggg ago.

The land between the road and the trail is in fact PRIVATE PROPERTY! The land owner is just an incredibly nice guy that allows people to pass thru. He won't continue to do that is his live stock is going to suffer as a result.

Negative sir. He even told me himself. He leases surface rights for cattle.

It's definitely private property. I dunno about jumping right to blaming quads and bikes though. I think if you ran into a cattle on a dirt bike the cattle would win. We all need to be careful.

Really, its not. The road is public. He just leases surface rights.

Oh I agree. My pops gave the rancher some old powerline poles for his corral since they got shot up. I just dont want everyone to have bad information thinking he can kick you out or close the road.

I should clarify, yes there is private property out around his house but the road does not cut through there. Everywhere else is public.

I stand corrected......but I'm sure we all agree, we should be considerate of his cows.

You can go here.

Rattlesnake Canyon Jeep/OHV Trail - Southern California

This comes up from Billy about every two years. When I talked to him it was motorcycles that hit the livestock.
