Turdfest Shooting Friday 3/14

I was going to post something similar, Armand beat me to it:

Is anyone else planning to do any rifle shooting? I heard a couple people mention pistols, but I haven't heard anyone else mention rifles. If no one else is bringing rifles (or wants to shoot mine), then I won't bother bringing mine. If everyone is only shooting pistols, that gives us a lot more options as to where we can shoot.

FYI, clay targets are not permitted on BLM land, so shotgun use will be very limited.

I'll be arriving Friday mid to late morning.

I CAN bring the following (and more), but I might trim down the list based on what everyone else is bringing:
- pistols
- rifles
- a bunch of ammo
- table
- 100yd metal gong target (ar550 suitable for high powered rifles)
- 25yd metal swinging target (for pistols and small caliber rifles)
- paper targets
- tennis balls
- rangefinder
- monocular
- extra eye and ear protection if anyone needs it (let me know)

And again, if there are any shooting newbies or virgins who want to learn about firearm safety, different types of firearms and ammunition, firearm laws, and of course how to shoot, I'd be happy to teach you.

I'm bringing my 9mm Beretta and .25ACP Beretta if I can find ammo.

I was thinking of making a target backing out of some scrap plywood and a cinder block.

Regarding safety, as Armand mentioned, eye and ear protection should be used. Like my locak range, if you wear glasses, that's good enough for eye protection.

As far as meet time, we can say maybe 1:30 PM if that works for everyone. A good meetup place could be at the cabins, could meet in front of Jeff's cabin.

Sounds good, Rick. Maybe you can get yourself edit privileges to the first post, so you can keep it updated with all the info.

Just so you guys are aware, campground rules strictly prohibit firearms, so while there just keep all firearm related items tucked away and well out of sight. And keep the shooting discussions down while at camp to avoid any problems with the rangers and possible firearm confiscation.

Is it ok to shoot hollow points?

I just want to shoot a clip of them to test fire, make sure they don't jam in my Beretta.

I might look for a Hummer poster to shoot at...

I'll add you to the list, should be a good time! I'm bringing my .25acp which is just like a .22. That would be a first gun to try if I can find ammo between now and then. I've seen BB guns with more kick than a .25.

Right on Jeff! My wife keeps saying she wants to shoot, but then always chickens out when I'm actually going. If someone breaks into the house, I like them to get shot up by two different guns ha ha.

Hollow points are fine in the desert, and yah it's a good idea to make sure that the ammo you're relying on for defense doesn't jam in your firearm.

I'll bring some zombie targets to shoot up. Those are always fun.

Unfortunately in California you can't legally use lethal force just because someone breaks into your home. There has to be an immediate threat of life or severe bodily harm for justifiable homicide in California. Otherwise a robber can break into your house or car, and steal all your stuff right in front of your eyes, and unless they're threatening life of severe bodily harm, you can't do a darn thing except call the cops. Even coming at them with a baseball bat would only justify THEIR use of lethal force against YOU. Yah, gun laws in California suck!

Officer, I told him to put his hands in the air. Looked like he was reaching for a gun in his pocket, so my wife and I shot him 27 times...

I too, can provide instruction from Democrat (never handled a firearm before) to more advanced practice drills. If anyone wants to try a particular caliber, let me know...I will be bringing only handguns, some steel targets and some paper if I can fit it in the Jeep with the camping gear.

No Clay Targets / No Steel Core Ammo

As previously mentioned in the M&G thread, clay targets are not allowed. Also be aware that steel core ammo is not allowed due to fire risk from sparks as they hit rocks.

I know how you feel. I have a few hundred rounds of steel core rifle ammunition sitting around at home. They'd be my ammo of choice in the highly unlikely event that a CQB ensues at my home, but otherwise it's just taking up space. There are some other California BLM districts that allow steel core ammo. I just haven't been able to get out to those areas for shooting.

Hey, where did you hear that lead ammo is not allowed? I know some districts of California BLM land, and other states' BLM land, prohibit lead core ammunition, but I haven't seen anything in that regarding for California Desert BLM.

I have a friend with dozens and dozens (and even more dozens) of guns and tens of thousands of rounds of ammo, who told me several years ago that California didn't want their wild life dying from lead poisoning, so it was outlawed. I just took him at his word.

Now that I think of it, he mentioned that to me when I told him I was going to take my guns up around Pilot Rock heading up to Arrowhead for the day. Maybe he was only talking about whoever is responsible for that area.

I just noticed we weren't on the list, Mike would like to shoot his 44 Mag. that he has never shot. It's been sitting in the safe for a couple years, it may be fun to watch him get tossed on his butt Okay, maybe I'm the only one that would get a kick out of that, lol.

He will bring a couple other pistols, he has quite a few to choose from. We have ear protection and he's got plenty of ammo for what he brings.

I understood that certain areas of Calif. didn't allow the lead due mainly to the Condors. I know our area (Central Coast) has banned lead, I think it's still allowed in the area we will be in. Besides, when's the last time we saw a Condor in Calico? Lol

Don't worry about lead ammo in the BLM areas by Calico. these are not hunting areas that are affected. The steel core rifle stuff might start fires, so be very careful...

I figured a 44 a while back, definitely has some kick to it. I saw one at a pawn shop that was a really good deal. So I went to a range to try one out. My hand was sore after that trip. I heard some giggling when I started firing. Maybe they were laughing at my terrible aim though. I didn't end up getting it, got my 9mm shortly after.

So where do you think is a good place to shoot?

Gatekeeper Area
I've seen people shooting in the gatekeeper area, and this would be the closest option, but if we're shooting long-range rifles (which I'm still not sure anybody besides me has interest in) there's probably not enough safe distance. Also I've heard people say that shooting is not allowed in this area, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

Mule Canyon Road
We'd probably need to drive 3-4 miles up Mule Canyon Road, close to where it meets Tin Can Alley, to find a good open spot for shooting, especially if we're shooting long-range rifles. According to Google Maps, this is about 6-7 miles from camp, and a 20 minute or so drive since most of it will be on slow dirt roads.

Dirt Road off of Fort Irwin Road
There's a big open area about a mile or so down a dirt road off of Fort Irwin Road. One of the local shooting groups that I hang out with does a big shooting event there a couple times a year, which is actually going on this weekend. According to Google Maps, it's 9.6 miles from camp, and because it's mostly a paved road getting there, it's a 16 minute drive (as opposed to 20+ minutes up Mule Canyon Road).

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

If we're only shooting pistols, I think maybe we check out the Gatekeeper area, and if that's a no-go then Mule Canyon might be a good choice, assuming we won't have to go as far as 3-4 miles in to find a good spot suitable for short-range pistol shooting.

If we're shooting rifles, then I think the dirt road off of Fort Irwin Road might be a better option.

What do y'all think?

Does anybody else care to shoot rifles? I don't mind sharing mine if anyone wants to use them. If not, we'll just shoot pistols and have more options as to where we can shoot. I don't mind. I get plenty of chances to shoot my long guns at my frequent range visits anyway.

I'm up for whatever. We could start at the Gatekeeper since that's close by. Last time when I was driving by there someone had a pretty large rifle that was on a stand and they had that on top of their pickup truck roof.

I haven't heard anyone mention rifles though. Plus, if we're there, might catch someone attempting the gatekeeper.

One thing about the gatekeeper area though is that we're likely to have company, so we just need to keep a close watch on our gear, especially when we're busy downrange setting up targets and such.

I have shot off Ft Irwin rd before and it is a great place. I am not shooting rifles this trip so any of the other spots are good for me. Hodge Rd is too far I think...

This run is not moved to April, that is a separate run. This run is posted as a sticky at the top of the page. The April run is a fundraiser and is listed amongst the regular threads.

Oh, welcome to the forum
